Update strategy and version questions

Dear all, I have some questions regarding the update of a TrueNAS server and what’s the best/stable version. The server is used as high performance storage for media. Only protocol used is SMB. Access from both Windows and MacOS. No apps installed. Pool size is 252TB and 112TB are used. The NIC is set to a fixed IP address. Currently installed:

ElectricEel-24.10.2.1 (Platform: Generic)

The server is NOT connected to the internet so I need to manually update. Questions are:

  1. Is it safe to update directly to a 25.xx release?
  2. Which version is known to be the most stable one?
  3. What has to be done before updating? Of course I already saved the configuration file.

Thank you very much for all your inputs.

Nothing really. The config file is good to have but shouldn’t be needed unless something goes wrong. I’m fairly sure a boot environment snapshot is taken during the update so you can always role back if needed.

I went from 24 to 25.04 quite recently and had no issues.

Thank you for your input.

Any reason why you chose 25.04 instead of 25.10.1 ?

A 25.10.2 update is due soon. He went with the mission critical, conservative choice. You would be okay with either choice.

Some of my kit is mission critical so currently that’s the version TrueNAS recommend. I’m happy to lag behind a little and let the cool kids play with the new toys.

It is recommended to update from one major version to the next one, and not skip intermediates.

With the 6-month update cycle, stable and safe updates tend to come… when the next major version comes out and the current train stops.

On both counts your upgrate path from 24.10 is 25.04.
