Upgrade from ElectricEel to Fangtooth, VM migration when?

Good question and to be honest I don’t feel there is a good answer at this time which is why I started this thread. The only sure way to find out is to upgrade and try the manual migration process and see if it works. If it doesn’t you can always boot back into the previous version which is what I did on my test system. Just be careful not to do any of the ZFS upgrades to the pools!

My gut is telling me that your VMs will NOT work. My $.02.

I would agree that upgrading at this point is a bad idea if you value your VMs, I took a chance and have nothing but regrets since I am unable to recreate old ones and at this point can’t create new ones AT ALL, part of the issue is the incus bug in regards to pools with space’s in the name, the other part is incus can’t access any other pool either so it won’t even initialize instances. Not worth the upgrade!

I’m thinking you should wait until the fall release.

Currently, you must recreate the VMs using your existing ZVOLs. Whether a migration is coming in a future release remains to be seen. I think the Linux VM will be easier to manually migrate. Windows is another story. You should review this guide before upgrading to Fangtooth so you have an idea of what’s involved for migrating Windows.

Another thing to consider is that ZVOLs must now be imported (no longer used in place) to use Incus VMs. So your current replication tasks will no longer work. Backup methods for Incus VMs are still a WIP, and I don’t think they will be available in the UI until the fall release.

If you were going to attempt upgrading to Fangtooth, be sure to choose the clone option when importing your ZVOLs. This will at least give you some chance of reverting to EE if things go wrong.

I agree in light of the situation. I have no reason to upgrade anyway as everything is running smoothly on 24.04.02. Thanks for the insight @cjm @troy @Spunky17 and the rest of you.

…as long as you aren’t using apps. iX plans to break apps migration in June of this year, so if you’re using iX apps, and you want them to migrate, you’ll need to do so before then.

oh good god, whiskey tango foxtrot…

seriously, i just got my apps all nice and sorted out and stable after the Truecharts and Docker BS…

…and I wasn’t talking to you. You’re using EE, which has already migrated everything to Docker. Frank, to whom I was talking, says he’s still on 24.04, which isn’t using Docker. If Frank is using iX apps on 24.04, they’ll auto-migrate (supposedly) to Docker apps on 24.10, if he does that upgrade by next month. After that, it’s reinstall.

I deleted the IX apps dataset long ago!

Starting to lean that way myself…
