Upgrade process clarification

Hi

I am running Dragonfish 24.04.2 and I would just like to clarify the upgrade process.

NB: I dont have apps, but yes I do have VMs. I am actually planning while waiting for the latest version of TN to be at a suitable cadence level.

It is my understanding that you should always upgrade your current TrueNAS version to the last minor update and then advance through the major versions till you get your required version.

Can someone tell me if the upgrade steps below are correct. I will be using the WebUI:

  • Dragonfish-24.04.2 → Dragonfish-24.04.2.5
  • Dragonfish-24.04.2.5 → Electric Eel-24.10
  • Electric Eel-24.10 → Fangtooth-25.04

Do I have to do any minor updates for Electric Eel?

thanks

You can go from the last minor release to the most recent release of each major version, so in this case you’d go:

  • Dragonfish-24.04.2 → Dragonfish-24.04.2.5
  • Dragonfish-24.04.2.5 → Electric Eel-24.10.2.3
  • Electric Eel-24.10.2.3 → Fangtooth-25.04.2.1

You can also take a look at https://www.truenas.com/docs/softwarereleases/#upgrade-paths.

@DjP-iX Thanks for the info

I wish this simple sentence was on the upgrade paths page.

If there are ZFS flags to be added, should i apply these before each major version upgrqade (ie.dragonfish to electric eel) or can I do them when I have finished upgrading to Fangtooth?

thanks

Please be advised, many of us here do not upgrade ZFS flags unless we know of a particular new flag that we need for its mission-critical function. If there isn’t such a need, we don’t upgrade ZFS flags because doing so will prevent us rolling back to an earlier version in the case of a problem.

Edit: There’s some good information in this thread: "New ZFS version or feature flags are available" after upgrading to Fangtooth 25.04. Is this risky
