I am running TrueNAS on my homemade server, but I’m not sure if it is up to date. I have been upgrading it consistently since I started using it, even when it was still called FreeNAS.
Currently, my server displays the following system information:
Platform: Generic
Version: TrueNAS Scale 23.10.2
Is this version still current, or is it outdated? I haven’t seen any updates on my server for a while and was just wondering if anyone could help me out.
Check your update window in the GUI for the different trains and see if you see those in there. Electric Eel is 24.10 and has Docker type apps. The previous one is Kubernetes type apps.
Thank you for your assistance. I am assuming that Scale 23.10.2 is outdated, correct? I see there are other versions available in the train:
TrueNAS Scale: Bluefin 22.12 (legacy)
TrueNAS Cobia: Scale Cobia 23.10
TrueNAS Dragonfish: Scale Dragonfish 24.04
TrueNAS Electric Eel: Scale Electric Eel 24.10
My question is, which version should I use? I am considering starting fresh and running a new version on a homemade server with the same specifications as my old one. I was looking to download a newer version, but I noticed something about Downloadable TrueNAS Community software and I’m unsure what that entails. I prefer not to try something new if the older versions are still working well for me, but I want to ensure that my server is up to date.
I can’t find information on when the different version lose updates and security updates. Starting fresh, I would go with the latest Electric Eel, 24.10. Community software is the version without Enterprise Support. I would try to keep to the two latest versions showing on that download website.
The current version is 24.10, which released last month. Your version is 23.10 which released in October 23 and is a year out of date.
When a new version is released, the previous version won’t get any more updates (be it security or otherwise)
If you want to update, your path should be from 23.10 to 24.04 and then to 24.10 because there were some major changes between major versions and it could lead to errors when you try to update from 23.10 directly to 24.10.
If you’re using truecharts apps, you will have to do manual work to keep your apps because truenas switched the apps backend from kubernets to native docker and since truecharts builds kubernetes helm charts wich don’t run with the docker backend you have to either delete the apps, update and start fresh with the new docker version, or migrate the truecharts apps to ix-official, ix-community (if available) or custom apps because those will migrate to the new docker backend.
Thank You all for your help ! I am going to try a fresh install and see if I can get this other computer to run then I will have to find out how to transfer some of my information on to the new computer.
Is the Trains page getting updated to reflect this status? User post #3 doesn’t appear this is the case, but it wasn’t a screen shot either. I would expect more of an indication of EOL and such there.
