I am currently running Scale 24.04.2 on two systems. I’ve been holding off on an upgrade for a while due to several issues that I’ve read about. My systems are basic, but do employ a few critical VMs (Win/Linux) that also need to migrate. Is this 25.10 RC paving the way for an upgrade candidate?
25.04.4 uses the same vm backend again that 24.04 uses. There’s nothing to migrate. The only things that need to migrate are apps if you run any at all
25.04.2.4
You’ll need to move through 25.04.2.4 as mentioned below above, but then you’ll be able to go from there to 25.10.0 when it releases. As long as you’re not running Apps (VMs are fine!) you can upgrade in that two-step fashion.
We don’t recommend (or support) leapfrogging major releases.
Thank you all for the info.
You should als not jump from 24.04 to 25.04 directly, but first to 24.10 then 25.04
For future reference, I was able to successfully upgrade from 24.04.2 to 25.04.2.4 by going through each train listed in the System->Update console in order.
Just to clarify before I perform the upgrade steps to get to 25.04.2.4 on my main NAS. I’ve read about the new instances/container feature. My VMs were created in 23.10.2, and you’re saying that moving through each upgrade release to get to 25.04.2.4 will not break or require any changes to these existing VMs? They will be listed in Virtual Machines and boot just the same on 25.04.2.4?
Release notes:
You do not need to migrate existing VMs from the Containers screen to the Virtual Machines screen at this time. We are developing additional guidance for these legacy VMs for the TrueNAS 25.10 release.
I ask because of this message. I’m not sure what “legacy guidance” would be needed if it’s a seamless upgrade.
If you update from 24.10.X (cant remember whats the last minor release of 24.10) to the last minor release of 25.04.2 which should be the .4 releases there should be no problem.
Thanks LarsR. So the path you suggest would be:
24.04.2 → 24.04.2.5 → 24.10.2.4 → 25.04.2.4
you don’t have to go through each minor release. If you’re still on 23.10 you can go to the last available release of 24.04 then to the last release of 24.10 and then the last release of 25.04
Upgrades complete. All is well. Thanks!
