I have a USB to 2.5GbaseT Ethernet adapter and I’m not having much luck figuring out how to get it working with TrueNAS. Internet research indicates that it should be supported by the kernel as of version 6.5+, however, when I plug it in then boot the system nothing shows up for it in System → Network → Interfaces.
Interesting but I think unrelated is that I do see a “enx00e04c68003b” interface listed. I am running a homebuilt system with a Gigabyte motherboard and not a Supermicro though so I’m not sure why that would be showing up.
That enx[…] interface likely is it and that’s just one of the reasons why USB NICs aren’t recommended with TrueNAS: They like to change names and that can cause problems.
That’s what I thought as well at first but that enx interface is still listed even though the adapter has been removed and the system rebooted.
that’s weird. Can you check the output of lsusb for any NICs?
Well, I just deleted it and it’s gone now so whatever it was it’s not an issue any longer.

So are PCIe NICs recommended?
yes. Most peoply prefer Intel ones although I’ve also had good luck with Realtek NICs.
Be aware that some 2.5G NICs can get quite hot (e.g. the Intel I225 and Realtek 8125 withoug b(g) suffix)

Thanks! I’ll keep that thermal advice in mind, tho my system has excellent airflow.
