BIOS or UEFI Install

Hi,

Just about to install TrueNAS Core on my new NAS setup.
Its a SuperMicro X11SSH-LN4F Motherboard with 32GB Ram.
Following this video (the nost recent I can find), it mentions that during the install you can choose BIOS or UEFI boot mode. It says that BIOS mode is recommended for legacy and enterprise hardware and that UEFI may be required for newer consumer motherboards?

So should I choose BIOS or UEFI

Choose UEFI.

Definitely use UEFI, that board should handle it just fine.
But reconsider your choice to use TrueNAS CORE.

  • CORE is on it’s way out, it’s being maintained in terms of security updates, but not more than that.
  • Active development is targeting TrueNAS SCALE so SCALE is the one that will see new features.
  • Several features in CORE have been deprecated, like Jails, Plugins and VMs.
  • Unless you have a very specific reason to use CORE and only CORE, use SCALE instead.
  • If you’re reading a guide that tells you to use CORE that guide is likely old and outdated at this point.
