Booting from drive connected to LSI HBA?

Hi guys, just started this journey so i’m basically still a noob.

Currently got all of the 4 SATA ports on my mobo populated (two 128 gb SATA SSDs for boot and apps and two 6 TB HDDs) so i’m buying a LSI 9240 8i to connect two more HDDs; i’m gonna flash it to IT mode.

I read everywhere that these cards tend to run hot; does this happen only in full load when writing large files?

I was thinking to hook up my two 128 gb SATA SSDs (the one for booting and the one for the apps) to the HBA and leave my four 6 TB HDDs connected to the ports on the mobo to prevent the card from stress and heat.

Will booting from the expansion card cause boot issues? Should i leave the SSDs in the mobo ports and connect the HDDs to the HBA?

Thank you!

Booting from it should be fine.

TLDR: It needs a fan pointing at it regardless of how many disks.

They ‘run hot’ because the cooling assumes high airflow, and there is not really scope for them to enter a low power mode. It will produce a little less heat with fewer drives connected, but still needs good airflow. Point a fan at it or suffer crippling doubts.
