When comparing TerraMaster and Ugreen NAS devices for running TrueNAS, several factors come into play:
TerraMaster : TerraMaster hardware is generally more compatible with TrueNAS and other alternative operating systems. The TerraMaster F4-424 Max and F6-424 Max models are particularly well-suited for TrueNAS due to their robust hardware and support for memory upgrades.
TerraMaster also has a more established presence in the NAS market, which can be beneficial for users seeking a reliable and well-supported solution. * Ugreen : While Ugreen offers high-quality hardware, there are some limitations when it comes to running TrueNAS. One major issue is that Ugreen has implemented restrictions that make it difficult to run TrueNAS or Unraid on their devices.
However, some users have found ways to work around these limitations, and the hardware itself is powerful and well-built. Ugreen’s DXP4800 Plus, for example, features a robust metal enclosure, 2.5GbE and 10GbE LAN ports, and the ability to upgrade to 64GB of DDR5 memory, making it a strong contender for those who can overcome the software restrictions.
In summary, if you are looking to run TrueNAS on your NAS, TerraMaster hardware is generally a more straightforward and supported option. Ugreen hardware is powerful but may require additional effort to bypass software restrictions.
Simply false. Turn off the watchdog in the BIOS (Ctrl-F12 to access it, IIRC), and you can run any OS you like. When I got my UGREEN 6800, I never even booted the factory OS; I swapped out the boot SSD for a fresh one, installed TrueNAS (well, installed a variety of OSs, just to play with them a bit), and away I went.
I’ve heard good things about the Terramaster units, but don’t have any experience with them. And I’m not sure the UGREEN units are that attractively-priced after the Kickstarter. But mine has worked just fine since I got it, last June IIRC.
Sure you can. But at least at the time I bought it, there was no recovery image or other way to download the factory OS, so I just removed the boot SSD in case I ever wanted to use that OS.
I have installed Truenas on the factory SSD on mine. Same model as dan’s. Works fine.
Back then when dan and me got ours (It think that both of our DXP6800s are from the Kickstarter campaign) no direct download for a factory recovery image was provided Ugreen. The last thing I read concerning such an image is that Ugreen provides one when you contact their customer support.
So after disabling the watchdog in the BIOS and before adding my additional hardware (more RAM, SSDs and HDDs) and installing Scale I simply made my own recovery image by doing a full device backup of the factory SSD using Clonezilla booted from a stick.
My DXP6800 also works great ever since after replacing my old trusty Microserver Gen8 last summer.
I have a Terramaster F2-423 that works fine with TNS. It was my primary TNS server while I was doing a year-long proof-of-concept and is where I test TNS betas. No complaints at all.
I replaced it with a DXP 6800 and a ZimaCube Pro for production and have only a couple of niggling complaints about either. Great buys at KS prices. I didn’t need the 6 bays but I wanted the 2x10Gbe.
The F8 and F2 are so different in cost and that one of them should be clearly the better choice for your use case.
