I need to update TrueNAS CORE 13.0-U6.1 to U6.2. The update instructions do not reflect with my TrueNAS Dashboard. When trying to update manually I am asked to upload a TAR or UPD file whereas the files I can download are DB or ISO files. Any assistance (above all step-by-step instructions) will be appreciated.
Those instructions assume you’ve already clicked on the “updates available” button on your dashboard. It looks like this:
I cannot find the update TAR file for TrueNAS 13.3 that does not have the word BETA in its file name. I want the STABLE update, not the BETA one. Thanks.
That’s not out yet as far as I know.
TrueNAS CORE 13.3-RELEASE in August - Announcements - TrueNAS Community Forums
My current version is TrueNAS-13.0-U6.1. Under System it says UPDATES AVAILABLE. If I download the file it does not say its name nor where its is saved. What is the latest STABLE version of TrueNAS CORE and where can I download it from? I don’t want to click APPLY PENDING UPDATE without knowing the file name and the complete information about it. Thanks.
You’re on the latest (same as me). Just hold tight until “august sometime” (no idea when). If you’re trying to update because your jail app is no longer getting updates; you are not alone. We are waiting for 13.3.
The thread you linked in your last post answers that question–it’s slated for next week.
13.0-U6.2 is the latest stable.
Version 13.3 has been released. However, the download page says “ WARNING: 13.3 is unsupported for Enterprise and is provided for Community users who need updated OS drivers and BSD jails. All other users are encouraged to migrate to TrueNAS SCALE 24.04 or later.” What is the difference between TrueNAS CORE and SCALE and why am I encouraged to migrate to the latter? Thanks.
CORE is BSD based. SCALE is Linux based. SCALE at this point is a super-set of the NAS functionality that CORE has. SCALE is where active development is continuing and has the most improvements to core NAS functionality (Auditing, SMB Multi-Channel, etc) as well as support for various Linux niceties, such as improved driver support, containers, KVM, etc. BETA1 of our next 24.10 (ElectricEel) release comes out in a couple weeks as well. It includes Docker support among others:
Many thanks, Kris. Does SCALE have any downside, drawbacks, or issues? Is the migration from CORE to SCALE simple and easy or does it require being a TrueNAS geek? Can it be carried out from the PC that is on the same network as the NAS? Now I have a new problem. When I try to open my TRUENAS folders on my PC Network folder a Windows Security dialog box opens and demands my network credentials (not my Windows Credentials) and I have no idea what they are or how to find them. Do you know the answer? Thanks again.
Are you trying to access a TrueNAS SMB share while logged on as the user “root”?
If so, know that Windows no longer allows the root account to access SMB shares. The remedy is to make another user account on TrueNAS and add that user to the SMB share(s) you wish to access.
You’re encouraged to migrate to the latter because iX is killing off the former. It’s nearly certain that 13.3 will be the last release of CORE, with the possible exception of security updates for a while.
Thanks, Redcoat, but I have no idea what you mean by “SMB share” nor by “root.” I have a TRUENAS folder inside my Windows Network folder. I used to click on it and see all the TrueNAS folders. Now the Windows Security dialog box prevents me from doing so. I would appreciate your telling me (step by step, please) how to make another user account on TrueNAS and how to add this user to the SMB share(s) that I wish to access, as you say. Thanks again.
You know there’s documentation for TrueNAS, right? It’s linked at the top of every page in this forum.
The “network credentials” Windows is asking for are the username and password used to access the share on TrueNAS. If it used to work before an upgrade (and you were running a very old version) and now doesn’t, it’s likely the problem is what Redcoat mentions.
I am sorry, dan, I am not a member of your TrueNAS Hall of Fame and you must have a different forum page than I do. I see no link to any documentation for TrueNAS anywhere on the page. Besides, I have not yet updated (what you call upgraded) my TrueNAS and the version has not changed. This is a well-known issue that was discussed in the old forum (see https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/windows-share-asking-for-network-credentials.113110/ but the last reply was “The recurring network credentials prompt issue when accessing a Truenas server in a Windows network might be resolved by rejoining the domain. The quickest way to do this is to disjoin the server from the domain, then rejoin it. However, before attempting this, ensure that your DNS settings are correct and consider checking for any other underlying issues that could be causing the problem.” I do not know how to join or disjoin the server from the domain, nor what the server or the domain are, nor how to make sure my DNS settings are correct. Perhaps you Hall of Famers could take pity on us TrueNAS nerds and give us step-by-step instructions? Many thanks.
TrueNAS Docs, very top of the page.
Restarting the SMB share should solve your issue. However, I suggest a different attitude when asking for a favour.
No, you obviously aren’t.
There are many reasons that Windows might start asking for credentials for a share when it hasn’t in the past. The last reply in the thread you link describes one of them which applies in some cases when the server is a member of an Active Directory domain. If you don’t know “what the server or the domain are,” then it doesn’t apply to you, because you aren’t using Active Directory.
But this is a red herring, because you’ve already been given a different place to look to address your problem. But you’re acting like you don’t even understand the most basic of things that you yourself set up.
You didn’t look very hard:
Perhaps you could make at least some attempt to help yourself before asking to be spoon-fed the answer?
You set up this server, didn’t you? Then why do you have no idea what “SMB share” means? Because you set up at least one when you set up the server. You know, at least somewhat, what “root” is, because you use it every time you log into the GUI.
We’re here to help, but we’re all volunteers–we don’t get paid to be here. IOW, we’re doing you a favor. Playing dumb doesn’t make us want to donate our time to help you.
I am mystified by your anger and by your nastiness to me. I did not set anything up. The TrueNAS machine was set up long ago by a technician with whom I have lost contact. I really and truly do not know what an SMB is, or how to set up a server. Nobody is playing dumb, and your attack on me is totally unwarranted. If you do not wish to provide detailed instructions that is your prerogative but being nasty to someone you don’t know and who really does not know how to go about TrueNAS or how to deal with a new problem is not. I hope another TrueNAS expert is nicer to me and really tries to help.
Back up what you need…
Back up your config file
On the dashboard Click Check for Updates
Now click the little round arrow so the system checks for updates
Now click Download Updates
You can click the Apply Update in that screen or wait till the file downloads
Now click Apply Pending Updates…
I’m not currently doing mine but that should do everything you need…
