Chaging hardware : Reinstalling TrueNAS Scale and restoring with backup

Hello, I have a TrueNAS Scale 25.04.1 and plan to change hardware. Therefore I need to do a fresh install.

When I first installed TrueNAS, the WebUI admin was admin but now on 25.04.2, it’s truenas_admin. Since I downloaded the backup nas-25.04.1-20250802075819.tar I wanted to know what admin am I going to use after the upload of the backup?

I heard that the backups don’t take users, is that true? Would I have to recreate all my users?

Swap hardware reinstall TrueNAS Scale then restore your config via the backup file from System > General > Upload Config.

Initially when you install TrueNAS, it will ask you for a password for truenas_admin, you need to enter this to perform the installation. Once you have this completed, TrueNAS will bootstrap like a normal new installation.

But first you must make a backup of your TrueNAS configuration file. Do this first if you want to maintain your configuration and user accounts. This includes your root account.

Now on your local monitor (or IPMI screen), it tells you the IP address of your TrueNAS system. Use this to get to the GUI.

Next you log in using the truenan_admin account. Then you restore your configuration file.

Lastly, log out and log back in as root using your old root password.

Done. It took me longer to type this that the operation take to perform.
