Device: /dev/sda [SAT], Self-Test Log error count increased: shows wrong disc

Greetings,

I’m Running 25.04.2.1 with 4x6tb Raid-Z1. Had issues a few weeks ago and once again got greeted by this error message.

But as you can see by the drive Storage tab the faulty drive is not actually sda but sdb instead. Device 68L0BN1 as correctly named in the 2nd notification.

That’s a bug right?

Also if you look at the Smart tests for sdb you can see the “power on hours ago” just jumping up to 65’000

Few days ago I installed scrutinity because you can’t read the smart values from the web interface.
Sadly the export function doesn’t work yet.

But same as the last one shown in the devices tab there are no errors.

The two error messages are not nessesarily related.

Can you post your hardware spec please, especially how the disks are connected to the motherboard. Also the results of
“zpool status ‘poolname’” in code blocks

While you are at is, from the command line please run smartctl -x /dev/sda and post using the ‘</>’ icon (code blocks) as well. Then do the same for sdb smartctl -x /dev/sdb.

Next, the output of lsblk -o NAME,MODEL,TYPE,SIZE,PARTTYPENAME,PARTUUID

This will provide all the data we need from a hardware perspective of the drives.

You have a WD drive and normally you will not have high Read Rate or Seek Rate numbers for a WD drive.

The Power On Hours has rolled over, this happens to many drives, but not all drives, and this can be confusing.

If you rebooted the system, drives sda and sdb can change positions, this is why we need all this data. At face value, the two error messages are not related, however we need more data to be certain.

Right… i heard about that before. You think that’s what happend here? Seeing as those 2 messages are 7 days appart, and i did upgrade BMC Firmware during that time so a reboot was involved, that does sound legit.

BTW; one of my WD drive died already and i got a Seagate Replacement drive because that was cheaper and i don’t trust WD anymore after the SMR/CMR scandal.

I was thinking about replacing those 4 6TB drives for 2 24TB drives.
Seagate Barracude Dekstop Drives ST24000DM001 for 265.- a piece as i’m only using the HDD Pool for Cold storage. Daily Backup and some other data that rarely get’s accessed. They do have terrible official values for longetivity… but they might holde out longer right? any any new Seagat drive you buy might be a refurbished anyway.
But then again i also have a Daily incremental Offshore Backup. So maybe i should just sit it out until the HDD truly dies.

One of your drives has failed. This needs to be replaced as you currently have no parity

Another one of your drives seems too hot to me (45)

Do not buy a Seagate Barracuda desktop drive - they tend to be SMR

These 24+ TB Barracuda may actually be the same HAMR platform as Exos/Ironwolf of the same capacities. CMR.
Careful check required!

They might. Or not.
Drives wear out, and should be accounted for as expendable.

I see the pool stated degraded and the device faulted.
But no Smart values or any other indicators that the device is fully broken and parity doesn’t work at the moment. Which specific values indicates this?

Are there 24TB SMR drives? I though in that size they should all be CMR.
But buying from digitec.ch I can easily, return them if they are falsely advertised.
11.-/TB is a pretty damn good price… IF they work.

I believe HAMR is also an SMR drive. It just records differently. MAMR is also slightly different, it will cook a hotdog for you while you write your data. I do not know if this will be shingled also however I suspect it will. How else will you fit 40TB per square inch, or so I’ve read. That could be a theoretical value.

This is the failed drive - its failing an extended test which means that at the very least you need to remove it from the pool, run badblocks on it and then consider if its potentially useable

There are SMR drives in these capacities as well, but basically no longer in consumer lines.

So… i just assume the device is offline because it’s in Faulted state?

The only difference to another HDD is the “online” button there.

If press the “Offline” button again nothing happens.

had the chance to get a 20tb Toshiba MG10
for 220 CHF used. Waranty until 2029

Did a quick ched but everything seems to be okay.

i see it takes quite a while for a device to actually become “offline”

Did you replace this drive as @NugentS has said?
This is a failed drive, no question about it. I don’t want to assume anything since you are testing a Toshiba drive now.

ZFS and Drive errors, could be related, but often are not and a ZFS error can lead a person down the wrong path of thinking a drive failure exists. in my signature is a Drive Troubleshooting Guide, take a look, answer the questions and you should be closer to having an answer, or just correcting the problem.

Right now I think ZFS, not drive failure, not until you can prove drive failure.

Yes
After the thoshiba fully tested and seems to work fine I’ve replaced the drive.
Now I can wipe and troughly these the 6TB WD Red.
I agree with drive failure as 1/4 of those drives already failed and had to be replaced by a Seagate 5 years ago!

Yeah… i think the WD Drive might be gone…
