Hard Drive Firmware Upgrade - What happens after I reconnect it?

Hi,

I have a hard drive that is throwing SMART errors (SMART test fails incomplete). There are no read, write, or CRC errors. After a ton of internet searching and reading, it seems that this is a common issue for this brand/model of HD. I also noticed that there is a firmware update that indicates that it may resolve this issue. My question is; if I remove this hard drive, update the firmware from another PC (Windows 12 PC), and then re-introduce this drive to the VDEV, will a full resilver be necessary?

You are being very cryptic here. I suspect you are talking about a Seagate/HGST drive, but you provided no model, and should provide the output of smartctl -x /dev/xxx where xxx=the drive ID (ada0 or sda for example)

If you are talking about a Seagate/HGST drive, read/write high error counts and that is all. You need to subtract hex ‘FFFFFFFF’ (4294967295 decimal) from the value. Any remainder (whole number) is the actual error count.

Edit: Sorry, bad info, you divide the number from ID1 by hex ‘FFFFFFFF’ (4294967295 decimal) and the resulting whole numbers are the errors.

Hi,

I didn’t mean to come off cryptic. I was simply trying to figure out how the resilver process goes for a drive that is removed and then later re-inserted. That said, the Drive is a Toshiba N300. As mentioned, I have read reports of people who have several of these drives failing to complete SMART tests but otherwise not showing any specific failure. Following is my output from the smartctl -x command for the drive in question.

In short, that drive has failed a read test (SMART Long/Extended Self-test).

You don’t seem to have many hours on this drive so if it is still under warranty, this test failure qualifies for an RMA.

A SMART Long delf-test reads all the sectors on the drive, and if it cannot read a sector it can map it out to not be used, however too many of these read errors will cause the test to fail. This kind of failure usually indicates the platter surface is flaking off.

Of other things I see:
0x02 0x010 4 10 — Overlimit Shock Events I think this means you basically dropped the drive 10 times, but I could be wrong.

I would not use this for data storage, replace the drive.

Thanks for the feedback. So, regarding this drive being dropped, that is strange as this drive went from package to installation in my server back in December of 2023.

As far as warranty replacement goes, it seems these drives are not directly warrantied by Toshiba. I just did a warranty check and I got this back

This has me worried. I purchased this brand new on Amazon. I’m going to try to contact the seller, but I already have a bad feeling about this.

Grab a screenshot of the Amazon posting and any emails you have that may say a warranty period.

If the seller refuses to help out, file a complaint with Amazon.

Also, call that Toshiba phone number, they may be willing to work with you.
