Hardware help

No no, for transcoding is a no way… but it will be 100% capable to replace the igpu of the CPU for what concern view bios and basic desktop function, and in future if the transcoding became a necessity i also totally agree when you say about iGPU

my experience using the iGPU of (ok, an older CPU) for transcoding has been to… not transcode at all.

i have the AST2400 and is capable to display Win11 and YT  i really miss that option in my main server, when i need a display output i have to plug a GPU

@Fleshmauler : Yeah, I mis-typed. I got the Pro and the ‘G’ which means it can handle ECC and has built in graphics that I’ve heard can do light transcoding, but I’d likely have to get a dedicated GPU for that.

@etorix : Agreed on the cost. I’m a little skeptical of Ebay, especially since ALL of them were coming from China. But I did find a used on on Amazon…which I see now is also coming from China. But returns are acceptable and I actually bought some insurance for that part. Figured $11 won’t break my bank and might be needed if its fake or been abused. I don’t see anything about vendor-lock. Hopefully it didn’t come from a Lenovo; that seems to be the primary culpirt.

@oxyde : yeah, I know about the graphics. I love that it has HDMI and the IPMI. Why would they still make server cards with VGA. Who even has a vga monitor any more (raises hand because I still have one for this very reason>. So I can start with it next to me, then move it to the closet or even an outbuilding in our backyard. Yeah, only the Pro version can support ECC. Then there’s the letter suffixes that denote graphics, lower power, and other stuff.

Memory: I actually found a good price for some kingston 16GB ECC, and it was less expensive than a 32GB card. If I feel the need to upgrade…well that’s a ‘future Cali_gator’ problem.

Boot drive: Found a Patriot 240GB for like $30. I’m still trying to get used to the OS taking up no space. Just gives me more room for stuff. I think the NVME and SATA 0 use the same channel; but since the board has 8 SATA, that leave me an additional port for an extra hard drive for more stuff if I don’t want it in the pool

Power supply: Yeah. Without a GPU I’d probably be OK to add a spliter. Future Caligator problem.

Case: Ended up geeing the Classico since my current cases jsut don’t have enough space for 6 disks. well, one does, but I’m using it for my primary machine and it would take a triple-swap of cases to get the server going. And it allows me to keep the current server up and running. The Define R5 is nice, but it’s almost 2x the price of the Classico and they look very similar.

Thanks everyone for your assistance. I’m sure I’ll be posting more once I get things going. You’ll note I didn’t get the hard drives yet. I’m going to wait until they are on sale again. Hopefully before Christmas. But I can at least get the basics of TrueNAS figured out in the mean time. Get the system stable before the pool is added. Mem test, etc.

Not sure why you have to have ecc: I happen to have all servers that use ecc but not by choice.

If you think you need ecc, may be economical now to find a motherboards and cpus that support ecc and non ecc memories. So you don’t have to throw out your non ecc mb and CPU if you decide to switch to ecc later.
