HDD dying or just a bad cable?

The sheer number of bad sectors should be a ground for RMA.

I guess I might be using the wrong terms, or maybe more accurately I dont understand the right terms. It seems I can pass a Long SMART Test as I can see that it succeeded in the Jobs description but the SMART test results of my drive shows the extended offline test failed. Unless they are the same test? But I dont think the time stamps match up?

Extended offline is ‘long’ & based on that screenshot, you aren’t passing :frowning:

ohhh, they are the same. So the success in the Job menu doesn’t actually mean that it passed?

I am running it again from the Shell. Is there anyway to actually check on the status if it is still running?

=== START OF OFFLINE IMMEDIATE AND SELF-TEST SECTION ===
Sending command: “Execute SMART Extended self-test routine immediately in off-line mode”.
Drive command “Execute SMART Extended self-test routine immediately in off-line mode” successful.
Testing has begun.
Please wait 982 minutes for test to complete.
Test will complete after Wed Nov 12 14:27:44 2025 EST
Use smartctl -X to abort test.

Obviously I can see it has started. But it seems that I wont have anything in the Jobs page to show its running? Or will I get a message when it is finished?

Yes, you won’t.

Negative, you won’t.

It uhh, isn’t a perfect system… man. i can’t wait for IX to improve the SMART GUI!

I guess it means that the job was successfully launched. Which is not the same as eventually reporting that the drive is fine.
Consistently failing a long test means: “RMA or bin”!

You need to come back after that period of time and check the test status smartctl -a /dev/sdd and see if Extended passed or failed.

Since it failed with in the first 10% of the test, it likely failed within an hour or two.

Yup, failed twice now. I tried it once and the just because I was experiencing weird things and it working fine after restart, I tried it again after a restart and it failed again. Good enough for me and going to replace it. I really appreciate all the great info from everyone.

Can you test the drive with another Cable?
Can you test the drive in another machine?
Can you test the system with another power supply?

If it works in another machine with no faults, then it could be the controller?
Are the drives plugged into the Motherboard or an Add in board?

If the drive fails a long SMART test, it’s the drive. No cable or connector involved (save for power).

I have tried another cable and another power supply. The only other machine I can test is my laptop using an external docking station. I will probably do that for fun once its replaced, but I am not expecting a different outcome at this point. Also, the drives are plugged directly into the motherboard.
