How do I safely fix permissions after update to 25.10.6?

I updated to 25.10.6 earlier this week. And since the update, I find that when I want to move files while attached via SMB from my Macbook Pro, I get errors about not having permission to remove file, move files, etc..

As I am the admin and am the only user who can delete on my homelab TrueNAS, I’m assuming that the permissions were updated during the upgrade. I also remember reading something in the update notes about SMB permission/security issues getting fixed.

I continue to learn about how to manage the TrueNAS but I’m still a beginner. I also have a suspicion that I could do more harm to the installation if I don’t fix the permission in the “right” way.

Is there an FAQ, howto or other documentation on the most correct way to update permissions after they got messed up in an update?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I think you mean this part form the release notes

  • Fixes an issue that prevented editing a share ACL (NAS-139535). Attempts to edit the ACL on a share could fail, which blocked permission changes. Editing share ACLs now works as expected.

but that should not have an impact on already set acls. The correct way to set acls is via truenas gui. Set the permissions for your user check the “apply recursively” checkbox and if child datasets should inherit the permissions also check the “apply to child dataset” checkbox.

I think I fixed this by going back to the permissions and reapplying the same settings as before. Well, at least I have had any problems moving or deleting any files since doing the reapply.

Thanks @LarsR for your quick reply.

An update.
I moved all files over using rsync, verified, then cleared out the snapshots. I needed to do a second delete of snapshots as for some reason some monthly didn’t get removed so the drive didn’t free up space. In the second attempt I used the GUI and selected the leftover snapshots and deleted those. And finally my drive mirror is down to 60% from 80%.

If there is interest, I can provide a short how-to on my process. Let me know.

Thanks again everyone for your help!
