Hi everyone I am a TrueNAS user with a simple home system consisting of one pool and one dataset. It houses some pictures, music and backups. It’s accessed through network mapping thru Windows File Explorer. I recently added Plex to the configuration.
Looking at my Macrium backup logs I noticed it had started failing to write backup logs to the NAS - the same day I configured Plex. So, I reverted to a backup file made before Plex, figured I’d worry about Plex later. BUT - still have the same issue. What the heck. I can’t add any files or edit and then save a file on my NAS. Error message is “you require permission from Unix user\apps to make changes to that file.” I’m a home user but I do maintain a change log and I made no other than Plex to this NAS.
This all happened around 3/2/25 but I checked and no Windows updates made, no changes to my pfSense firewall, no nothing. So did something update in TrueNAS then? If so, how do I fix it? If not, how do I set up a simple ACL for an SMB dataset that consists of “Everybody?”
Much thanks
Maybe a couple pictures will help.
Error message is “you require permission from Unix user\apps to make changes to that file.” Even though I am the owner of the dataset?
Do you have a copy of your Truenas configuration file before this started happening? Even a few month old will work if you have it.
I suspect when you installed Plex, it changed your permissions. I’m not a permissions expert and i don’t know if this will help at all. I actually don’t think it will do the trick but it is something easy to try.
Also, backup your current vonfig file before doing this.
Goid luck
Yes I did have a backup before Plex and rolled it back and it still didn’t work. What the heck? LOL
One more tidbit, Pool_ 1 shows this as ownershipMaybe the issue is there Not sure how to add User ==> myusername here. I go into “Manage SMB shares” and add me but it still doesn’t show up here. “Apps” is the owner and won’t let go. Last question, do both my pool and dataset need to be configured SMB? Or can I just do it at the pool level?
Much thanks!
Problem is now solved, somewhat. I restored the TrueNAS configuration that contained Plex and uninstalled the Plex app. Permissions are now all restored and I can map to them in Windows File Explorer. I’ll have to go back and figure out how to install Plex without making the mess I did last time.
