As others have said Ubuntu 24.04 should be able to use an SMB 1 share just fine.
I even said that above. But: If it is a recent version of Ubuntu, then no it won’t out of the box. You have to enable SMB1 in the Samba config if it is not (newer versions have it disabled) and is part of what I explained above. If for something earlier than windows 7 then you may also have to intall the cifs-utils package to connect with SMB 1 in like Win.3.11. The SMBv1 has been disabled/removed from just about everything nat this point in time.
Maybe it is just me, but I was going off the following both in my initial post and the followup: If his NAS is freeNAS 8.3 (2012) then what I said still applies to Ubuntu and windows both should be able to access the NAS. In Ubuntu 18.04 and earlier SMBv1 was enabled by default and should have not real issues with access. Starting with version 19.10 of Ubuntu I think SMBv1 was disabled or removed as Samba 4.1 became the base for SMB starting then.
If the NAS is a newer more current version such as Scale, then additional work is/may be necessary and if Ubuntu is newer than 18.04 then additional work is also necessary. So it depends on what the OP wants to put together as to how much work is neessary.
One tip is to after making changes either reboot the system or restart the services, or log out and log back in so any configuration changes to Samba, SMB, networking, etc. can be picked up on. Not always necessary but good practice.
Colin, you are correct, my current freeNAS does connect via a windows share to a number of old windows systems on my network, including a Windows 3.11 machine. I’m trying to use Ubuntu 24. I have read a little about SMB 1 and want to check whether or not that is set up. There is a GUI on the Ubuntu.
I have checked to make sure samba is active and I have ports 139 and 445 open. I believe that the Ubuntu is contacting the freenas, but says that the it failed to retrieve the share list. I’m a little concerned that I have the incorrect share_name in my fstab file.
Thanks for the help, need to read and try a few more things. This should work.
Well… I finally got it. There were a few other issues with my Ubuntu 24 and seemed a little odd. So, I removed the entire OS and started over. I followed the same procedure, I kept notes, and after getting the OS in place and all the smaba, SMB1 etal, installed, it all worked. I’m willing to bet that my first Ubuntu install was not complete or had an error in it. Anyway, seems to be working fine now.
I am considering purchasing another computer where I can install the latest TureNAS on it and see how it works. Maybe I’ll run them both on the network and see how I like it. Anyway, Thanks a million for all the help, Mike
