How to silence emails alerts about bad sectors

One of my hard drives has 40 bad sectors. It was like that when I bought it.

I have set up email alerts in TrueNAS but I only want to receive alert when something new happens. However I now receive an email every day with the following content.

What can I do to stop this?

TrueNAS @ truenas

New alerts:

  • Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 40 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.

Current alerts:

  • Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 40 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.

Bought new or used? New should be covered on warranty.

40 errors… Ay, it’s probably dead, Jim!.. Get a replacement an listen to the alerts.

Hi Mike,
it’s has has these 40 bad sectors since I purchased it in 2017.
Since the drive will have between 1-8 billion sectors I have never been too bothered

Until now, when they are causing annoying emails.

You can turn the alerts for SMART defects off entirely, or leave them on.
It’s on or off, that’s it.

In theory, I suppose it may be possible to wipe the SMART data. At least that’s what I’ve read.
But I don’t know how practical that would be for a typical end user, and I wouldn’t advice doing it.

Thanks.
I may have to do that until I replace the drive but first I’ll try to filter out the emails but setting up an email rule.

Just add an email filter for that!

Tempting, but that alone would probably filter out the email in all cases, even when it was logging other alerts. You’d have to make a filter that would filter if it contains “this and ONLY this” which might be more challenging.

@FelixO others have already warned you about the need to replace the drive so I won’t bang on that drum further - hopefully you have multiple-drive redundancy (eg: RAIDZ2) to protect yourself in case the drive decides to fault further.

Hi,

for the email filter Ive copied almost the entire text of the email so any different new issues should get delivered.

I’ve got 2 x triple mirrored vdevs
