I would like to ask that user (paradoxiom) detailed info on his metal bracket for side disks, because the microserver G8 I’m going to set TrueNas, would need 4x 2,5" disks.
Image in that old post is not clear.
Thank you for any help, again sorry if this is not the correct category.
I’m using a MicroServer Gen 8 for TrueNAS, and it’s frankly getting long in the tooth for that application–it wasn’t exactly state of the art ten years ago when that thread was posted. But if I were looking to run 4x 2.5" drives in one, I’d use adapters and put them in the existing 3.5" bays. If I wanted those bays full, and to run another 4x 2.5" drives, well, I wouldn’t use a Microserver.
I don’t see that there’s a user here by the name of paradoxiom, but’s possible that user joined here with a different username (as I did). But if that user doesn’t respond here, you can join the old forum and send a DM.
@otolo-G8 do be aware of the limitations of the onboard HBA on the Gen8:
Ports 1 & 2 operate at 6Gb/s, but ports 3 & 4 only at 3Gb/s
it will not operate in IT mode, which is highly recommended for ZFS
I would strongly recommend getting an IT mode capable HBA and connecting the drive cage directly to it.
FWIW, I have a Gen8 with an HP P222 SAS HBA in it doing this, with 4x SATA HDDs in the drive cage. I also have a couple of small SSDs hooked up directly to the onboard HBA that are used as cache. They sit up where the CDROM would go, and use the CDROM’s power cable with a splitter.
