MoBo request - Mini-ITX, ECC and 5+ SATA

hey folks

as supposedly many of you i’m about to build my own NAS-System at the moment (my first one in fact) and i’m desperately in need of suggestions regarding a motherboard…

i know, there’s a lot of information here already, as well as on the old forums and various other places around the web, but i’m already reading and searching for days now and can’t find anything matching my criteria.

the case i’d like to build in is the Jonsbo N2, which is a Mini-ITX case with 5 bays. after reading a lot of stuff on ECC-RAM vs. non-ECC i’ve decided to go for the ECC-variant. now my problem is, i can’t find a suitable motherboard matching the following requirements:

  • Mini-ITX formfactor
  • supports ECC-RAM
  • provides 5+ SATA-connectors (or equivalent OCU-Links)
  • is still being sold - preferably around Europe! (which seems to be the greatest struggle…)

folowing the hardware-recommendations from the forums, i’ve been looking into multiple ASROCK Rack and Supermicro Models, but it seems like most of the products matching my needs are older models that cannot be purchased anymore (disregarding 2nd-hand stuff)

can anyone provide input on what boards would be suitable alternatives?
honestly any useful feedback would be much appreciated!

Markus

“Low-power” would probably help as well.

A mini-ITX Supermicro X10SDV (Xeon D-1500, 6 SATA) looks like the perfect candidate. It is old, and best snapped second hand if you can, but still sold new. @Davvo should, at some point, give us feed back on a Datto/Gigabyte equivalent.

Alternatively A2SDi boards (Atom C3000, 8-12 SATA). Expensive new—and hard to find used.

Cheap alternative, if you only require 1 GbE and have access to a 3D printer: Gigabyte MJ11-EC1 (embedded EPYC, 8 SATA). Not new, but available for cheap from Germany.

Do you want to run apps/VMs on top of storage?

Next few weeks if everything goes as it should, but from the little testing I have done it looks like a hot board (but the little screamer installed does its job); IPMI works fine but requires Java in order to use the kvm.

mainly the system should store my crapload of RAW files and some other data…

since i like playing around with tech-stuff however, i’d prefer to be able to mess around a bit with things like media-streaming within my home etc.

Supermicro X12STL-IF

6x sata, 1x nvme, full 16x PCIe

For Xeon-E or Pentium

Oh look, there’s a meme about that!

As long as you are willing to fork with and ungodly amount of money for a pet project, there are options. If you however want to be reasonable, those options shrink… also, you get different options in North America vs Europe; rest of the world is generally unlucky.
