Network freeze after upgrade to 25.04

I think I may have finally found my smoking gun…

Console warning message:

[ 50.457075] TCP: enp4s0: Driver has suspect GRO implementation, TCP performance may be compromised

enp4s0 is this nic: 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Aquantia Corp. AQC113C NBase-T/IEEE 802.3an Ethernet Controller [Marvell Scalable mGig] (rev 03)

However, raising a ticket seems pointless as it’s been done before:

and the devs wouldn’t touch it.

I have 3 nics onboard that won’t work and no PCI slot to put in one that does so I’m up the creek with zero paddle it seems if this is the trigger for my freezes

You could try disabling gro using ethtool and see if that makes any difference.

Tried it and issue remains.

When I executed the command in the console, it returned “gro turned o” with the cursor stuck after the o and stayed like that which seemed a bit odd.

Is that expected behavior? Maybe I’ll try it again later.

Upon hard reboot after the freeze the GRO error message was there again so it hadn’t persisted. I’ve executed it again. it returned to the prompt.

I’ll see is it returns anything in a while. Could the system have tried to turn it back on?

Right, settings via ethtool don’t persist, typically they’re added via post-up hooks when the interface comes up. I guess in truenas you could do it via a script that’s set up via the gui to run post-initialisation.

Unfortunately, disabling gro has had no effect.

I just wanted to post the resolution of this issue for anyone who encounters similar.

The cause was multiple HW issues that are common to these boards which is why I had the same problems on 3 of them.

  1. Thermal paste issue which led to the board eventually failing to power on
  2. These boards not working with Crucial RAM

I was lost until I found this thread over at Serve The Home

Once I had the one board repaired and both with Samsung RAM instead of Crucial, everything works perfectly.

I would strongly recommend that anyone with issues with these boards or considering buying one to read all the now 59 pages of that thread.

These boards are exceptional value for money but they are not for the faint-hearted.

Big thanks to everyone who tried to help me troubleshoot this.
