New install - can't connect to web UI, connection times out. Server doesn't see anything else on the network

I can’t connect to the web UI. I can ping the trueNAS box, 192.168.1.2. It assigned the IP through DHCP, so it is clearly connecting to the router, but I cannot connect to it. From the trueNAS box, I cannot ping my desktop, 192.168.1.66. It can only ping the gateway, which I already manually set to my router’s address. Both the trueNAS box and my desktop are on the same unmanaged switch. I’m writing this post from the desktop, so there’s nothing wrong with the switch. I unplugged the network from the trueNAS box, and lost the ability to ping 192.168.1.2, so DHCP is working correctly and it isn’t IP collision. The router is not doing access control. All my other devices work fine. This motherboard connected to the network just fine before I installed trueNAS on it.

I tried to read the documentation on (link to the truenas documentation removed because it yelled at me to not put links in my post) but there’s barely any info there, no guidance for troubleshooting, and no indication that I should need any special network setup other than DHCP before configuring in the UI. The big “search with AI” button on the documentation is a huge knock to my confidence in this product while I’m already this frustrated with it.

Someone please tell me what I’m missing.

No special setup network is required.

It is difficult to debug network related issues over forum posts. Please always provide exact command output and error messages.

Pinging desktop hosts in general is not a good network debugging tool, desktop hosts may drop incoming ICMP by default.

You said you can ping the TrueNAS box, but said hat you cannot connect to it? How did you to connect? What precise error message did you get? Did you make sure to use the correct port?

I’m just putting the machine’s local IP, the IP that shows up on above the trueNAS terminal menu, into my desktop web browser, like the tutorial says to. the browser tab just spins for like 5 minutes and then times out, saying that the connection was severed by host.

i was pulling my hair out thinking the server was the problem. there was a problem w/ the gateway mask on the computer i was connecting with.

Can you elaborate on this? I am currently experiencing the same issue where one of my computers on my network can’t connect to any of the web ui elements of the server, but it can still see it on the network and move files around in windows file explorer.
