Greetings,
Looking to replace my Synology 8-bay NAS with something running TrueNAS Scale - main use is as an SMB server to 4-5 desktops, also self-hosting Vaultwarden and NotesNook, possibly some transcoding.
I’m looking at the following hardware:
Supermicro AS-2015SV-WTNRT (https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/system/wio/2u/as%20-2015sv-wtnrt|) (12-bay 3.5"/2.5”/NVMe) using AMD 8004 series CPUs.
I have a couple of spare small Samsung M2. NVME cards I can use for boot.
Thinking of an AMD EPYC 8124P (16-core) or 8224P (24-core) CPU - should be comfortably sufficient.
GPU-wise, will a simple Intel Arc A310 (standard or Omni) work ? I could run it headless, but it never hurts to have a cheapish GPU in there. Otherwise have old Sapphire Radeon 8GB RX580 and EVGA GeForce GTX680 cards available (pulled from my decom’d cheesegrater Mac Pros) - would either of these work and work better than the Intel ? (probably not !).
Storage-wise I’ll be migrating my existing 8x WDC 3.5” Red 3TB (WS30EFRX) - at least initially - may add some bigger spinning rust later, or more likely swap entirely to SSD.
Network-wise I’ve switched to 2.5Gbps switches/hubs - 10GB is not an option just yet. I see this Supermicro has a 10GB Broadcom BCM57416 controller which doesn’t do fallback - any thoughts on a replacement that does 10/5/2.5/1/100 ? I do have the Synology E10G18-T1 card in my current NAS - this does 10/5/2.5/1/100 speeds, but I understand that one is locked into Synology systems. Intel X550-T2 looks viable ?
RAM-wise I’ll probably go with whatever 6x 16GB DDR5 I can find at reasonable prices.
Any thoughts / concerns / suggestions ?
