NordVPN Meshnet on TrueNAS SCALE

Hello everyone,

I’m currently running a TrueNAS SCALE server at home and I’d like to set up a small offsite backup for my most important data at my mother’s house. For that purpose, I’ve installed OpenMediaVault on a Raspberry Pi and plan to link both systems together.

From what I understand, the easiest way to connect them would be something like Tailscale. However, with Tailscale my regular internet traffic wouldn’t be masked.

I already have a NordVPN subscription, and NordVPN offers a feature called Meshnet. According to their documentation, it’s possible to install NordVPN and enable Meshnet on the Raspberry Pi.

Now my question is:
Is it also possible to install NordVPN and enable Meshnet directly on my TrueNAS SCALE server?

As far as I know, it’s possible to run Gluetun in a Docker container on TrueNAS and connect it to NordVPN so that the server’s traffic is routed through the VPN.

But what about using Meshnet itself on TrueNAS? Has anyone tried this or found a working solution?

Thanks in advance for any help or insights!

Best regards,
Capox

Since truenas is designed as an appliance and doesn’t officially support installing packages on truenas directly the official way would be to use an app like gluetun.
If you know the risks and 1000% know what you’re doing you could use the developer mode to re-enable apt and install anything you want. But if you encounter a bug and can’t reproduce it on a clean system without developer-mode your bug report will likely be closed without looking at it.

I used to have Gluetun running in a Dockge container and connected it to my NordVPN account that worked really well.
But now I also want to connect a machine outside my home network to the NAS. The only simple way to do that would be through something like Tailscale.
The problem is, I’d lose the external IP masking in that setup.

That’s why I wanted to enable NordVPN´s Meshnet to get the best of both worlds: a reliable way to access my offsite backup and keep all my devices’ IP addresses masked.

Can’t you set the vpn on your router? that way you could let the router define which ips should use the vpn

I don´t know tbh… I´ve got a Fritz!Box 7590 AX. But that seems like a good idea. But would i still be able to connect to the offsite NAS then?

I have a 7590 and afaik you can set up the vpn on it and even tell which ip should route through it. Fritz even has youtube videos explaining how to set up a vpn.
Since you’re also german i’ll leave the link in german here

Edit:
Another good video is this one
