The GUI should allow for All drives which support SMART Self-Test to be available for testing.
Eh, it is okay I guess. Give Multi-Report a try if you haven’t already. It does require more effort than Scrutiny to install, but once there, it’s pretty good.
I support this proposal for the following reasons:
Scrutiny is not an officially supported or partnered project of TrueNAS. It hasn’t been updated since April 2024 and currently has over 200 unclosed issues, raising concerns about the project’s reliability.
Version 25.10 of the SMART middleware removes all foreground pages but still runs in the background. This means users cannot monitor the SMART middleware’s operation and lose essential functions such as configuring temperature alarm thresholds.
As far as I am aware, only smartd runs in the background (as it always did, hence error messages when a critical drive error occurs), but there is no SMART Short or Long tests being conducted.
I don’t know what email client you have, I’m using Outlook. I have it configured to make my email stand out. See image below. If the subject line has “critical” or “warning”, color it red.
There is no need to open an email that is not red. hope this helps some.
Yes, “FreeNAS”, my pool and server are old, even though I’m now running SCALE. Someday I will change the name but it works so why mess with it.
I will try to make adjustments for it in Multi-Report v4.0. I’m not an HTML expert but maybe I can make a few changes to make my HTML better. But yes, that is terrible.
Considering the discussion in today’s T3 podcast, it seems the results of SMART testing is not thought to be reliable enough to be reported as a stand-alone separate item in the GUI. The discussion sort of begs the question of why must a user then have to do manual smart tests on a regular schedule if data protection is an important feature of Truenas?
I’m convinced. The GUI has too much anyways. It’s cluttered and complicated. I’d rather just use Cron Tasks and custom scripts for these NAS appliance essentials.
If we’re removing GUI inclusions because some users report issues with reliability, what’s the reason to use TrueNAS? If I wanted to run command line I could do what I do with TrueNAS on a minimal Debian installation. Won’t be upgrading until it means I don’t have to duplicate the easiest way to be running SMART in favor of the more tedious version.
If it’s really thought that people don’t want SMART make the functions and interface optional and default off in options, but able to be turned on and used by those who find it convenient by toggling it back to the functionality seen in previous TrueNAS versions should a user not be one of the few who for some reason dislike it so much they need the functionality absolutely removed from the GUI don’t force those that like the functionality to do without.
