I think I fixed it. I had the GPU isolated (and potentially attached somewhere). I detached it and restarted. Everything worked as-expected. Thanks again!
Thank you @zzzhouuu for your work. I was able to get my Tesla P4 working / not working with this. If anyone has any suggestions I’d appreciate it.
The gpu isn’t isolated, shows up in nvidia-smi and I am able to assign it under TrueNAS settings for Jellyfin app and inside Jellyfin under Transcoding.
The issue I’m encountering is that playback will start and nvidia-smi will show a brief moment of activity and then playback will stop and nvidia-smi shows nothing active on the device. I’ve tried with Jellyfin transcode cache set to ram as well as a temp space on disk. Same result for both.
I previously had things working with CPU gfx and ram cache but opted to “upgrade” to P4 which seems more like a downgrade.
I’m also not sure if the P4 firmware settings are correct as I purchased the card used and wondering if it was configured in a way that isn’t conducive to transcoding. I’ve attached card output for reference as well

Can restarting solve the problem? Or is it a hardware issue? I also have a P4 that works well now, so it shouldn’t be a driver issue.
I’ve restarted both the TrueNAS hardware and Jellyfin multiple times after making changes and then running tests. Nothing seems to make a difference. I have noticed though that changing the rate on the device receiving the transcoded content will briefly allow a slightly longer playback.
Do you know of any CLI tests or other I can run to check the P4 outside of an App. I’d like to verify it’s not the card if I can.
The P4 is designed to live in a system with rather active cooling and high-pressure fans, so while I’ve not seen it myself it’s possible that it could be thermally throttling after a certain amount of time decoding - though I wouldn’t expect the NVENC blocks alone to bring it to that point. ![]()
What’s the cooling setup?
According to your statement, I also somewhat agree with @HoneyBadger point of view. Do you use the original passive cooling for your P4 or a modified active cooling module?
Just using the passive cooling for the moment. I did set the P4 to be persistent and cap at 65W using nvidia-smi commands. While monitoring the gpu is idling at 7W / 50C and isn’t getting above 50W / 68-70C before it quits.. Literally only processing for about 3-9 seconds. So I don’t feel it’s thermaling just yet. I’m thinking there’s a bottleneck somewhere. What is everyone else using for the transcode cache setting in Jellyfin or similar with GPU transcoding?
I think the simplest way is to try using a fan to see if the issue is resolved, as all my settings are default.
I’ll give that a shot over the weekend. For my peace of mind could you look at the P4 firmware config I shared on my first post and compare to the output of same for your P4 and let me know if there are any differences. My other concern is the P4 I have was flashed with something setting a value which may be causing the problem.
This is my output.

UPDATE: First thank you @zzzhouuu.
I’ve found the primary issue. A Jellyfin plugin called “Encoder Killer”, which had been working fine with Intel QSV transcoding, doesn’t seem to like anything when enabled with this configuration. Finally looking at the Jellyfin logs it was showing as killing any transcode no matter how far below the threshold the transcode was set. I’ve disabled it and the P4 is transcoding like a champ.
Now I need to resolve the new issue where it’s actually able to transcode long enough, more than a minute, that the card is actually hitting temps which bring it into the thermal throttling range. So off to figure out the smallest fan option I can come up with. None of the existing addon options for coolers or fans will work in my existing configuration. I’m using a JONSBO N1 Mini-ITX NAS Chassis with about 1/2 inch of clearance between the back edge of P4 and the drive cage.
Seeing an anomaly and trying to determine what’s causing it. If nothing is using the P4, and system is idle, when initiating “nvidia-smi dmon” from shell it starts by showing that the card is pulling around 25W @ 2999Mhz which will then taper off to 8W @ 405Mhz and remain there for as long as it continues to output. Exiting the monitoring and then starting again will show similar results always with the mclk being at 2999Mhz and wattage being between 21-25.
Question: Is this normal with how the card / drivers are being queried and it’s showing some artifacts or is there a phantom draw that is using the device when it should be idle?
NOTE: Ignore the temps. Not actively using the P4 and still working out a cooling solution.

I just want to say this worked for me
geforce gtx 1060 6gb
now visible in nvidia-smi and plex app
thanks a bunch ![]()
UPDATE: Apparently the issue is a known problem with Nvdia drivers when the card is not actively calling the drivers and they unload resulting in the card hanging in P0 state which will cause the Wattage, Mhz and Temps to rise like there is something using the card.
The solution is to enable Driver Persistence via the nvidia-smi commands as root from the TrueNAS shell nvidia-smi -pm 1 this however does not persist through server reboot.
With this enabled my P4 will now idle at 6 Watts and 299Mhz at all times.
Put it in a post startup task.
Sorry to repeat myself…
I’m building my first home PC server, where I wanted to take advantage of my 1060 GPU. Unaware of the incompatibility, I installed the “25.10” version of TRUENAS, but the system detects the GPU, but I can’t use it (I’m new and don’t know how to explain).
I read the post, but I don’t understand how to install the NVIDIA drivers to run my 1060 GPU.
Could you tell me how?
Thank you so much…
You can run the one-click installation script from my repository, or manually download the driver files to replace them.
Thank you so much.
I tried using it with an “admin” account, but it says I don’t have permissions, and I don’t understand why…
With admin accounts you need to use sudo in front of the command
Hey,
I’m using 25.10.3.1 with the standard truenas_admin local administrator account (and have tested with a separate account given the FullAdmin TrueNAS access, as well as Shell access), even with using the ‘sudo’ command the Shell still states ‘need to be privileged’.
I’m at a complete loss of how to proceed further.
