Plex and Filebrowser wont display new content

Currently 25.04.1.
Added some films to my Plex and cant see the added content.
Filebrowser cant see folders created in share directory , cant add folders/files within Filebrowser there either.
No error messages, havnt altered any permissions, rolled back Plex from 1.4… to 1.2 rebooted Plex , rebooted server… most strange?
Search continues… will update when ive found problem…

Suggestions most welcome…

How did you add the files to the folder originally? Also can you see them through that method?

Does this mean that Plex didn’t automatically pick up the content or something else? Check by filtering the library by folders not by movies to make sure that Plex isn’t seeing it.

Hello thanks for your reply… hadnt thought of displaying films by folder…however using the Plex search didnt find the new entries anyway, it did on my friends Plex which we have sharing rights and pointed to that…

My plex has been working for many years , through the succesive upgrades of TNS to the 25.04.1 ver now.
The Apps, Plex , Filebrowser, Emby , Cloudflare sit in an Apps Dataset, and the config files in same App folder and not the iX generated. And these in turn point at other smb Datasets.
I have just sorted by date my films Dataset that is shared with Plex as smb, and see the last film I added in June12 2025 does register in Plex, the stuff i added yesterday is invisible …I know plex can be funny abt certain file extentions but… 3 other films?

Which led me to Filebrowser,in the smb share added couple of test folders, goto the Filebrowser webconsole, not shown in there either…?
Ive not changed any shares, permissions, ownerships but what i have clicked in last action was the irreversable ZFS change all seemed well no errors etc…till now?
So i need to read a bit and research what implication this change is supposed to do, and if this is the culprit?

Luckily its only time in restoring from my Backup ( yay !) of my Data if i have to reinstall TNS…
But thankyou for reading and i hope you clever lads and lasses out there might be able to assist and resolve this…

I’m guessing that they still didn’t show up with this, right?

Is Plex running on the same machine as the data is stored on? Or is it accessing it via a protocol like smb. Not sure if you mean you can access it via smb or if Plex is. Do you see the files via smb?

Also do you see the files using the shell? Navigate to the correct directory using cd /path_to_media and then run ls in that directory to see all the files. If you have a ton of files you might want to run a different command to make it less overwhelming. Make if you see the folders make sure to go into the folders to make sure the video files are also there.

If it was only Plex having issues seeing it I would say it was a naming issue since that is usually what happens to me.

Hello manna thankyou for your perseverance with me… !

As per your suggestion raised an interesting point

took some screen shots of the directories…

My Apps and their configs lice in separate directories in the Apps Dataset.
In Pool1 the Datasets have shares as smb and I can manage them thro my Linux mint desktop

View of Media_Film User dave ( via Linux Mint )

View via Shell User Admin on Truenas Scale

I see Casablanca shown in the User view from my desktop but no in the Shell listing ls -l

How curious…!

More investigation… as I say have changed nothing been working fine upto Jun 12 last film Ghost does catalogue…!
then I engaged the ZFS ditty , no errors no flames or grinding noises.,… and now here we are ?

So User Dave sees the missing files… Admin on Truenas cant…?
Files are ok as my friend Andy downloaded same “test” files and I can view those via Plex as we have linked boxes…

I hope the .png files display in the message…

I need a lie down in a dark room…

D.

One quickie here, Filebrowser App is the same … files visible as User ,but not within the Filebrowser Admin Webpanel. as its Admin login.

Also run Emby, any new content is also invisible…so globally Apps permissions have been altered.

This is interesting. I suspect that the files are not visible to the apps user which is probably running Plex, emby and filebrowser.

For the dataset that these files are in can you share what the permissions are?

Use the instructions below to get to the current permission settings.

Instructions from the docs on how to get to the ACL info

Basic ACL permissions are viewable and configurable from the Datasets screen. Select a dataset, then scroll down to the Permissions widget to view owner and individual ACL entry permissions.

To view the Edit ACL screen, select the dataset and click Edit on the Permissions widget, or go to Sharing and click on the share widget header to open the list of shares. Select the share, then click the options icon and select Edit Filesystem ACL.

Good Morning Manna and All reading this…

I feel more confident in the knowledge that running the ZFS ditty to add functionality after the 25.04 upgrade has in some way corrupted the Apps view of the Datasets it uses, as its the only change Ive made since upgrading 24.25.25.04.25.04.1. Previous upgrades have also gone seamlessly , i do note reading that using the ix folders for holding Apps configs gets refreshed to default and not as persistent as pointing to your own folder. My only App using this method is Filebrowser.

From what we have gathered

My Apps Plex, Filebrowser and Emby point to Datasets for their Data…
It is a fact the old data before June 12 is visible and usable in the Apps… ( I use this date as its the last film I added to Plex and is visible.) anything added since in the same folder is NOT seen by Apps.
I have logged into Shell as Admin and Root and new files are NOT visible in the Dataset Shares, (re screen shot Casablanca film)
Using a PC and viewing the share via my linux mint, I can see ALL files new and old.
I also noted that the User Plexname had its password changes 30 May this year, now its something i would never go into so what has changed that arbitrarily?

Here is a view of the ACL records

I cant quite get my head around the fact in the share view via PC I see all files in the dataset folder, yet within Shell using ls -l as Admin or Root to view files and their permissions , "Casablanca " is invisible.
As the Apps Filebrowser and Emby are similar I can only conclused a Global change has occured, as Ive not changed any ACL or permissions myself.

My permissions may not be absolutely correct but have worked these past 5 years or more since previous Freenas Truenas Scale upgrades…

Time to get the dinner on and cogitate.

Ive just watched a Youtube on Datasets and Permissions

and one thing I took away was the Posix permissions and if USER GROUP and OTHER are “755” then there are NO limiting permissions on the Dataset, its wide open…
Deleting my ACL settings to the Media_Films Dataset and applying POSIX open

Save…

And miraculously, my Plex now sees ALL the files in the Media_Dataset .

Im onto something here… now I have no rights to the share…another trip to the console and now those rights are restored…

Well now Im on a roll. I’ll alter the other Datasets tomorrow now Casablanca is visible I may even watch it…

I still cant understand how all the Permissions got screwed up, hiding files within a group of others in the same Dataset which were visible, and the only action attributable to a change was the ZFS ditty.?
And of course Globally not just one Dataset affected.
Anyway, It passed the time and feel accomplished It got sorted.

Thank you for reading and taking the time to reply manna , I wonder if there will be an answer, but for now its working and solved this mystery, with my settings.

Love my little Truenas Scale Server, humming away in the corner, did a deal with the neighbour for a fancy video card that has a GPU… watch the lights go out as i add that in next week…

If anyone has any questions please feel free to msg me here.

Kindest Regards

Eastonboy.
Dave.
