Hello,
I recently updated my Truenas server to be running through a VM on Proxmox. After having everything configured correctly, I went forward with installing Plex, and upon setting what folder it would pull my media library from, this folder then began listing as empty in all file explorers I have tried. It still shows the size of the data stored in the dataset on Truenas itself, but any attempt to access the folder both inside and outside of Plex has found nothing in the folder. I was able to see all the files in this folder up until I had installed plex. I still have access to the now empty folder after installing plex because I have set my account permissions correctly.
Is there a known bug with Plex on Truenas that can cause this issue? I have done some digging myself and have made no progress towards recovering this data. I still have access to all my files that are not in the media folder of that SMB share, so I know that it is an issue stemming from plex trying to access that folder. I have tried uninstalling plex, deleting and recreating the SMB share, as well as exporting and importing the pool to see if ‘turning it off and on again’ would yield some results.

Please show list of datasets. Either post screenshot of the Datasets UI in the Web UI or the output of the /sbin/zfs list shell command.

Hi All,
Apologies but another noob hit the plex permissions wall on TrueNAS Scale - and I cant work out why …
I have a single SMB Share setup for my Media Files. Set this up as an SMB Share, and I can connect to it from windows and managed to transfer my Films and TV Series over from my PC (which is currently running Plex locally).
I have added UID 586 (Apps) and the group as well via the ACLS to this mount point…

The output is messed up. Can you do a sudo ls "/mnt/carriage/windowset/Plex Media" and check if media is visible there. You don’t have to post the output of the comand. If files are visible using that command then you likely have a permission issue.

I was able to go in and view the folder contents properly. The files are there and able to be at least seen inside of the shell. I’m still lost as to why these files are completely inaccessible through both plex and my SMB share.
To make sure that it isn’t a permissions issue. I tried changing the owner and owner group of my Plex Media dataset to both be apps. Plex was able to see the next level of folders after Plex Media (anime, movies, music, etc.) but it still wasn’t able to see or access the media inside.
edit: I have just tried deleting and reinstating the apps group permissions on the Plex Media dataset. Now Plex can see all the files inside my ‘Photos’ folder, but all other media in every other folder is still inaccessable. I also still can’t access these photos in the SMB share.
Did you apply the change in permissions recursively? That you could see the folders now, but not the contents of the folders suggests this might work.

This was it! I reset my windowset permissions and then applied them recursively to all child datasets. Thank you so much!
