Poweredge r510 internal drive question

I have the 8 bay version of the poweredge r510 and want to boot from a “internal” ssd. I know the internal sata headers are capped at 3/gbs and I would have to splice power or use a USB power adapter. OR would getting a pcie ssd adapter card work better? Would I really see a performance difference? The pcie card I purchased was only 20 dollars but I have copious amounts of sata cables and power cables which would save me some money.

Cheers

I would always advice to use the on-board SATA headers. And 3Gb/s is absolutely fine for boot drives. Be careful with those machines though, iirc the RAID controllers in those might not be able to be flashed to IT mode which would be an issue for TrueNAS if you have a config without a HBA

The one I purchased came with the h200 and it flashed fine! I shoved the SSD in a bay slot just to get it up and testing but good to know a sata header will work fine. I purchased a CD from ssd bay seeing at the original CD drive used slimline sata so that should be cool then.

I’ve seen a lot of forums saying NOT to use UEFI on that machine is there any specific reasons on that that is current in this day.
