Poweroutage, cannot reimport pool

hi there,

I recently experienced a power outage on my TrueNAS Scale (24.10.0.2) and realized my pool and datasets were erased. I have two mirror drives that showed disks with exported pools… So I tried following steps to export them and then reimport.

Now when I try to reimporting, the following shows:
-2095 is not a valid error (GUI)

  • zpool import
    pool: DataSet
    id: 8610289484681839548
    state: ONLINE
action: The pool can be imported using its name or numeric identifier.
    config:

      DataSet ONLINE
        mirror-0 ONLINE
          c912daae-836f-4228-bde0-631de6bd8ed6 ONLINE
          09cc475a-e7ab-4509-8ca4-0cfdd152913f ONLINE

  • zpool import
    cannot import ‘DataSet’: insufficient replicas
Destroy and re-create the pool from
    a backup source.

I have a feeling one of the drives are corrupted? If I can somehow retrieve my files that would be ideal. Please help!

Run Smart LONG tests on your data drives and report back. Then run the following and post using Preformatted Text, </> on toolbar or Ctrl+e

sudo zpool status -v
sudo ZPOOL_SCRIPTS_AS_ROOT=1 zpool status -vLtsc lsblk, serial, smartx, smart

thanks, I am running it now

not sure why but during initial startup, when i run zpool status -v, it only shows my boot-pool. If I try zpool status -v DataSet, it shows no such pool

after running import a few times, then the status appears and then it shows one of my hard drives is failing. I will run the long test however to see if both are failing

Is there anywhere else I can find more information on the Smart reports? I checked the Jobs page and it said succeeded for both drives, but it took a long time

I was hoping we would have found the ‘bad’ drive.

@HoneyBadger Looking for your input and expertise.

I’d pull a smartctl -x /dev/sdX for sda and sdb as that should have the results pages included alongside the rest of any warnings.

I will add, and hopefully HoneyBadger has noticed, there’s been a non trivial amount of people with bad pools after a power outage and no UPS (or a UPS but Truenas did not shut down). Normally in the past, zfs could survive such outages without corruption so I personally think there’s a zfs issue with later versions.

I was thinking TrueNAS isn’t handling intermittent power issues as well as the past. It might be a good idea to have the systems set to remain off upon unexpected power off, instead of attempting to power back up. These may be brown out and intermittent power related.

Yeah, we’ll never actually know for those cases as we were not there and measuring things. I’ve just never seen so many issues with power failures and lost pools. Brown outs or intermittent power are more devastating at times than surges.

Which is why, for me, a UPS is a requirement for a NAS (Truenas). In the past, it handled power outages better IMHO.

For some reason sda shows I did not run a long test?
Here is a screenshot of the job that ran successfully

Let me know if my output is not formatted correctly? I used the preformatted text option

Your results were formatted fine. The BarraCuda is SMR and not recommended for use with TrueNAS.
SMR vs CMR ServeTheHome

@HoneyBadger what do you think? Any commands to run or try power down, pull Baracuda and see if it comes up in Degraded?

I should have not cheaped out to begin with… sigh

If one of the drives are still working, would swapping it out with another drive allow me to still reimport?
I have another drive that I am ready to swap with

I would wait to hear from HoneyBadger. I didn’t want to do anything that may make troubleshooting difficult. If you had a single bad drive in a mirror pair, the pool should have still worked. You may have ‘errors’ on both and the system doesn’t know what to do since there are only two copies.

So far so good (including formatting), except for the SMR drive but that should not prevent importing a pool.
We can have a look at labels:
sudo zdb -l /dev/sda2
sudo zdb -l /dev/sdb2

The presence of the SMR drive isn’t fantastic but as stated should not be preventing a pool import as we’re on mirrors here. Let’s see the labels as @etorix suggested.

truenas_admin@truenas[~]$ sudo zdb -l /dev/sda2
cannot open '/dev/sda2': No such file or directory
truenas_admin@truenas[~]$ sudo zdb -l /dev/sdb2
cannot open '/dev/sdb2': No such file or directory

There is no sda2 or sdb2 but there is a 1

Ouch! The drives are seriously out of sync.
Is the SMR Barracuda the current sda ?

Unless @HoneyBadger has a better idea, I’d suggest to take out the current sda (check serial numbers…), import the degraded pool and resilver with the new drive.
