Cannot Import Pool to Truenas

Hi all,

The other day my NAS crashed and upon boot it froze. This had happened before so I disconnected my drives and got in to Truenas. Importing the pool crashes Truenas everytime. I have another pool running on an SSD that works fine. The problematic pool was able to be imported in to a Live Ubuntu and passed a scrub. I can currently mount the pool read only in Truenas. It consists of 2 12TB disks. I have tried to import the pool with just one disk connected and still doesn’t work. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

First: please format the command output properly (in one set of three backticks each, not per line).

Does the TrueNAS console show any error messages when you now try to import it?
At which point did the boot freeze?
Attaching a copy of /var/log/syslog to this thread might also be helpful (just like a complete description of the hardware used and the TN version).

Sorry I’m not sure what happened with the formatting I’ll try fix it. I have tried to attach the syslog but it is over 4MB so have made it available here. It still cannot import. I was in debug kernel so switched that off and have tried to upgrade to 25.04 as well. It was the 19th-20th when it initially crashed.

That’s a really long syslog covering 70 different boots :sweat_smile:
Can you point me to a time where the system actually hung?

Hahah sorry, all of those boots are me because of it freezing due to pool import. At one point I was getting, WARNING: zfs: adding exisiting segment to range tree.

I have ran memtest86 and all was good and was live booting Ubuntu on same machine so don’t think it’s hardware related. Thinking I may have to rebuild the pool but am trying to avoid that as don’t really want to buy new drives. They are passing smart tests fine as well.

That still doesn’t help finding something useful in this huge log - athough just taking a quick look I saw multiple warnings about pending sectors on sda and sdb.

Also again: please provide a full description of your hardware.
I could see in your logs that you tried 24.10.2.4 and 25.04.2.4.

A particular point in time for which I could check the log in more depth as well as output of smartctl -x for each disk (as I saw some warnings) would be very helpful.

It doesn’t look too bad but I wouldn’t trust this. Have you tried a different boot disk?

My boot SSD is weird its at least 6+ years old Aliexpress job. Could be the issue you think?

If your boot disk is actually failing it could cause all kinds of weird behaviour.

Alright will try installing on a small hard drive to test. Will let you know what happens

I have tried with a fresh install on a different disk and still it is crashing when trying to import. I have attached logs from fresh install as well. I have had a quick look through, and I’m not sure what I’m looking for, but I can’t see any errors or warnings occurring when it restarts.

I might’ve overlooked something but the logs look fine to me.
If memtest was fine I don’t have many ideas left.

The power supply could theoretically also be the cause, failing PSUs create all kinds of weird errors and you said crashes had happended earlier but thats just a guess.

Do you have another computer on which you could boot truenas with the zfs disks attached?

I will try this tomorrow. Thanks for all the help by the way. If that doesn’t work do you think importing the pool in to Ubuntu, removing a drive from pool, creating a new pool and cloning to that one then trying to mount in truenas would be a possibility? I’m not sure what else I can try to preserve data besides buying another drive. It’s already been down for a week which is annoying.

It might if the crash was really while importing but your system reached truenas.target at which point the pools should be imported if I’m not mistaken (which I might be).

Would that be the case on the new system where I have never imported the pool however? I did the first boot, tried to import then crashed. It restarted and the pool wasn’t imported but was online and ready to import again.
