Debian isn’t waiting for 2038 to blow up, switches to 64-bit time for everything
“Epochalypse…” ![]()
TrueNAS is already 64-bit only, so not affected by this anticiapted fix for 32-bit embedded systems.
There are a lot of libraries that still use 32bit time or assume 32bit in on-disk format of things. The harder you look, the more depressed you get ![]()

ZFS was designed for 64 bit time, (in seconds). I also vaguely remember that a second time field for fraction of a second, is available in much higher resolution than other file systems. Certainly better than Milli-seconds.
But, yes, I would agree that many utilities or libraries are either 32 bit time only, or don’t fully implement 64 bit time properly.
On a real date based apocalypse, I think the year 10K will be a complete disaster. Image all the worlds humanity has spread to, that are using 4 digit years. Trillions of people at risk! Your shower might not let you out because your 5 minute time ended up overflowing back in time!
