Replace 1GB NIC card with 2.5?

Hello,

I bought some 2.5 nics and a 2.5GB switch to try to get 2.5GB going.

I wanted to start off with TrueNas cause thats where most of my stuff is.

Can I just disable the current on board NIC and install the 2.5 one and just use the same address?

If that’s the case it seems too easy lol.

Thanks!

I personally don’t even see any major need to disable the onboard nic. Consider using a monitor and keyboard to make the changes (or ipmi), never a fun time using the web interface to make major changes to the web interface :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks will do. So then just same IP on 2.5 will do it? I just thought that new nic would jack up the bridging or something.

Thanks again!

Yeah. Just do not forget to remove this IP from the “old” NIC.

Well 4 months later I am trying to cut over to this card. Its installed but I cant seem to take your advice. No matter what I do I seem to get the following error:

INTERFACE_UPDATE_ALIASES_0. The network 192.168.1.0/24 is already in use by another interface.

Has my original NIC been set up wrong? I’m mostly a Windows guy but I do know about /24 subnet but I’m at a loss for what this means.

Not sure how to proceed so if someone can point me in direction?

TIA….

You need to remove the IP address from the old card before you can assign an IP address in the same network to the new card.

Thanks, I think that means using the console then correct? I was trying to avoid that but I’ll take a look.

No, you can perform all these steps until you click on “Test settings”. Only then will TN actually apply them. And then you have 60 seconds to reconnect to the UI and confirm to “Save settings” or the system will revert your changes.

That 60 second timeout is a bit tight, but the field is editable and you can put e.g. “300” in there.

Thanks again Pat, that sounds awesome, however I do not see a TEST SETTINGS button?

What am I missing?

You have to change some network settings for this to appear.

Remove IP address from old card - nothing changes for the moment.
Add IP address to the new card - nothing changes for now.

Then press the “Test” button.

Thanks all! Worked like a charm. Don’t know why I couldn’t wrap my head around it lol. I never knew this was a thing…until now. Thanks again!
