After running in “Early Adopter” mode during the 25.10 development cycle I no longer seem to be able to set my update profile back to “General” despite running the stable release version of 25.10 now.
Does anyone know why this might be or if there’s any way to force it back on to the “General” track?
There’s not a realease avalable yet that’s tagged as “general” so that category is not yet available. You’ll have to be patient an wait for a release that’s deemed fit for general use to get that category.
With most software, you’d expect a “stable release version” to be intended by the developer as suitable for general use. There are always bugs, of course, and it’s pretty common advice (especially for conservative users) to avoid a .0 release of anything, but that’s ordinarily the developer’s intent.
This is not the case with TrueNAS. A “stable release” is, according to their software status page (and if you ignore their social media presence), intended only for early adopters–it’s what most other developers would call “beta.” At some point presumably they’ll decide it’s suitable for general use, and that most often happens around the time of the .2 release. If previous patterns hold, that’d likely be February-March of next year.
25.10.2 is Early Adopter. 25.10.1 has the General Choice. Boot to the 25.10.1 version and hit the check for Upgrade and then check the train choices and you should see General. Not sure how soon 25.10.2 will take to see General…
If you get on a train you wish to get off of before the next stop, You can go to system → Boot and pick a previous boot environment from there to make active on next reboot. Mileage may vary on the success of moving back. You may cause some issues with apps is a likely one. But there could be other issues.
Says that EA is now 25.10.2.1 and General is 25.10.1
but I don’t have an option to go to 25.10.1 in my update page.
is had already downloaded 25.10.2.1 to keep me on the EA
the trains (update profiles) should allow me to go to a more conservative profile even if I am on a EA profile now. and if I really am on an early version just leave me there until a general version is ready.
In general I like the new profiles, but the implementation needs a little adjusting.
You need to be on a release that is recommended for at least general status before you can select that option. At the moment according to TrueNAS Software Status | TrueNAS Documentation Hub that’s 25.10.1 or earlier.
It might not feel intuitive, but the validation is there to prevent you from being in a situation where the Update page says you’re on the General profile while you’re actually on a release that hasn’t been approved for that profile.
but you could easily have a flag that sys you are in the general profile, but on an early adopter version, and a big red warign when you switch that says you are on a version that ins out of profile.
further it would be good to have an defined process that would if say I am on the 25.10.2.1, and switch to General then:
1 big waring when switching and once done that I am on the wrong version for my profile, and a option to back step me to the correct “General” version.
For the users that just want an appliance they should always have an easy way to get back to a general or mission crit version.
for the users that want to be a little early adopter we need a way to easily get off the Early adopter train.
but thanks for the perspective, I better understand the reasoning.
Just another voice to add that it is strange for new users to see that “General” is marked as “not available”. I think most users would expect that select a different “branch” would get you to the head of that branch. Or if “versions as tags” is a better analogy then I would expect to be able to easily flip from one tag to another (and get warnings if apps are incompatible).
I’m sure it’s much more complex under the hood and it’s not as easy as I portray it, but now it’s quite confusing for users, even for thechnical users, IMO.
