I would give CIFS Documents Provider a try as an alternative, looks like this supports the Android “Storage Framework”, who knows it might work similar to a FUSE fs and allow you to open files directly.
I mounted the SMB share with “CIFS Documents Provider” but can’t find the storage in Fossify File Manager | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository
What is the exact mount point?
I don’t think there’s a mount point. Quoting the Android developer documentation, “The document-provider schema is based on a traditional file hierarchy, though how your document provider physically stores data is up to you.”
You’d choose files in your media player in this case, given that the player supports the framework instead of just relying on classical Linux paths.
edit: I tried it, and was able to play video directly by “sharing” it from the CIFS app to VLC. Not the most convenient, but I don’t know what truly supports this type of storage access.
I agree with HoneyBadger below, it’s much better to use a media server, especially since TrueNAS can conveniently run it
If you’re looking for “stream” as in “streaming media” then Jellyfin is open-source with a client available on F-Droid.
