My truenas stopped booting and is showing grub rescue, i did a complete reinstall of truenas core, and the installed can see all of my drives, but after installation, my Dell R510 server cannot see the drives to boot from? Any ideas?
How are the boot drives connected to the computer? Do you see them in the bios menu or BMC
I do not see them in bios, what is bmc? I see them all in the TrueNAS installer though
And they are connected to a sad raid controller in it mode
Do you one boot drive or more? Have you check the cables to the drives? You need to go to the Dell support page and get the documents for your model and troubleshoot why the boot drives aren’t showing
There may be a service tag that you can put in on the Dell Support website to narrow down where they are. Motherboard manual , etc.
i wanted to try to open it up to check things but the server is jammed in the rack, so i can get it to slide out. And i dont see a configuration shortcut key during boot, and uefi when i go to raid wizard says no raid controller detected
Go to Dell and find the spec sheet for it so we know what hardware it has. The service Tag should let you know warranty status and find downloads & documentation.
Did you set up the server? Do you know how it was configured?
You have to go through the troubleshooting guide or contact Dell Support, if you have a contract.
oh this is a second hand dell server i had for years, truenas was running fine for years on it until today when it booted to grub rescue, it had the raid controller swapped years back with an it mode flashed one that worked for years, again, until today when it booted in grub rescue and i attempted a reinstall. can only truenas see the it passthrough drives, is that normal? I previously had it run from the USB
You need to provide all the hardware, software and how you set up TrueNAS. We can only go on the information you provide by posting.
Did you read Joes Rules to Asking for Help? I posted that because you don’t provide enough details to know anything but the server model and it’s not booting.
Dell R510
12 X 2tb HDD via SAS
32GB Ram
Processor: Will check
Raid Controller: Should be Dell PERC 200 in IT Mode
Fresh reinstall of TrueNas on single drive (Installer can see all drives)
No HDD are visible in bios, only usb drive used for install.
Cant run any of the commands since it will not boot into truenas
Are all the drives attached to the Dell Perc 200 in IT mode? Did you download the User Manual and follow the troubleshooting steps? Is there a single boot drive or did you install mirrored boot drives? Is the BIOS or UEFI pointed to the boot drives and are they in the boot menu?
yes they are all attached to the controller, using a single boot drive. Cannot point the bios to the drive as it does not detect them. All the dell troubleshooting says to open the raid controller in the uefi/idrac, but when i do that it says a raid controller is not detected.
When you did the reinstall how did you select the boot device, what were your choices?
I’m guessing you had to select a USB with the TrueNAS software on it to reinstall.
I used the usb to install then selected a disk from the list of 12 hdd to install truenas on
How did you boot the USB then? Is your boot order set to boot that first? What items are in the boot menu list?
Just the usb and the NICs for network boot
Go to page 63 of the Hardware Owners Manual and try to enter system setup mode. Figure out if it was set to BIOS and those menus are correct or UEFI.
Page 67 looks like you are choosing or viewing the different booting options. Try to find the controller in either of those two options and menus.
Page 74-75 is UEFI boot menu and options. It looks like you can add and configure boot options there.
If that isn’t helpful, try entering the BMC, Baseboard Management Controller and try to see if it has any error messages that may help in troubleshooting.
“then selected a disk from the list of 12 hdd to install truenas on”
It’s that disk that needs to be first in the boot order.
I’m thinking the SAS card failed in some way so I’m swapping it, cause it’s not even detecting the controller
Make sure not to use a RAID only type card. It needs to be a plain HBA or a model flashed to IT mode. You can check the cards with sas2flash -list or sas3flash -list for most models.
