CRITICAL
Pool Main state is DEGRADED: One or more devices has been removed by the administrator. Sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue functioning in a degraded state.
The following devices are not healthy:
Disk WDC WD142KFGX-68AFPN0 2NJN3T4X is REMOVED
2025-11-23 08:12:39 (America/Chicago)
I have another disk arriving later today. It is currently doing a scrub. The disk that failed is the top disk (named ada0) because 1) its activity light is off and 2) it is not listed in Disks. There is a scrub currently going. Should I yet it finish or just replace the drive as soon as possible?
I’ve had two other disks “fail” and I’ve replaced them (a year ago was the most recent) but not in this manner so any added advice is welcome.
I assume I insert the new disk (since ada0 is already removed) and then add it to the pool… I don’t remember exactly how to do that but as I recall the GUI made it fairly simple.
I would let the scrub finish if it’s already done a lot. If it’s still early, you can decide to cancel, since resilvering essentially will scrub the pool with the new drive replacement.
If it’s physically removed?
In the GUI, you find the “removed” member of the vdev and choose the option “Replace”. Choose the new replacement disk.
Do you know why the disk was removed from the pool?
The email says “The following devices are not healthy:
* Disk WDC WD142KFGX-68AFPN0 2NJN3T4X is REMOVED”
This was different for me. The past two times I got an email that said “New alerts:
Device: /dev/ada3, 8 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.”
But this time it just removed it. So, I now have a new drive in and I have “replaced” the old drive. This is the second time this drive has gone out it seems: ada0 was replaced just last May.
It is now in the process of replacing the disk. As I recall, this will take until morning.
Did you look at any other SMART data? If the count is 8, the drive is likely going bad. A SMART Extended/Long test on the suspect drive would help determine if it should be replaced. Of course if it is under warranty, I’d RMA it.
