Hello everyone,
So, recently one of my hard drives started to show as Degraded, so I purchased a new WD Red. I went to Storage > Devices and selected the degraded hard drive, then I set it to Offline. After that, I removed the degraded hard drive and connected the new drive. Here is where the issue started, the new hard drive is nowhere to be found, the list shows the old drive as removed but the new one is not showing up for me to join “Replace” it. If I go to Storage > Disks, the drive doesn’t show up there either, I only see 9 drives and it should be 10. Any help is appreciated, thank you!
Stupidest things first; checked connections? Remembered to plug in power? Did you try swapping SATA cable? Does your bios detect the drive? Can you feel the drive spin up on boot if you have your finger touching it during boot-up?
I’ve had new drive DOA several times… so don’t expect ‘new’ = ‘good’ unless you burned it in.
edit//: Is drive detected on any other system?
I haven’t tried the drive in other systems, I’ll do that in the morning. As far as the other steps, when I plug the old one with the same cables/connectors it works fine (besides being in failure state). I’ll test the new drive and see if it’s DOA. Thank you!
Some WD Red drives are SMR and are completely unsuitable for ZFS / TrueNAS. However I think 8TB drives may all be CMR.
