TimeMachine breaks on Fangtooth moving from Beta to RC

When moving from Fangtooth Beta to RC, I lost the ability to use timemachine for backups. I can see the SMB mount for time machine, but my mac spits out “The selected network backup disk does not support the required capabilities.” If I rebooting back to the beta and timemachine works again. I also received the same error trying the Goldeye nightly.

This TimeMachine backup has worked for years through many other updates, but it’s only breaking now. Any thoughts of what I should look at?

If you have any multiprotocol shares configured, you will have to remove them or reconfigure as single protocol shares. See the notable changes here:

i saw that, but it isn’t a multi-protocol share

What is output of

midclt call sharing.smb.query '[]' '{"select": ["name", "purpose"]}' | jq

Well, this is insane. I just did another reinstall of the beta and TimeMachine is working this time… 5th time’s the charm! Apologies for wasting time.

I had the same problem. I inspected all the shares in the list and didnt see any multiprotocol shares. Doing this at the CLI revealed that I have a couple more shares than can be displayed at once in the GUI. I wasn’t scrolling all the way down the list and overlooked the extra shares, which of course contained the one multiprotocol share. I removed it and TimeMachine works again.

What is interesting is that the one multiprotocol share that I had was disabled. So just the mere existence of the share was enough to break things.

It would be really nice to surface this as a warning when a TimeMachine specific share exists on the system.
