Pool imports, but not all disks get "pulled in"

Hi all,
I recently had to reinstall TrueNAS because for some reason something on my install went bad from a power outage, and wouldn’t boot anymore. I know I should have a UPS, but it’s not a priority right now. Short downtime on this system is not a concern.

Once I got TrueNAS running, I went to import my pool. TrueNAS appears to import it perfectly fine- no errors or anything, but then looking through the storage and drives pages, not all of my storage drives are actually getting “pulled in” to the pool. For whatever reason, there will always be a couple storage drives that list “N/A” for their pool, and the drives (and quantity) that do will change on reboots.

When looking at “manage devices” under the pool, the disks that list N/A on the other page are missing their HDD icon in the list, and don’t have a capacity listed. There’s a name for the disks (IE sda, sdh, etc), and that same name exists within the full system drive list.

What on earth could be going on here? I can run smart tests on every drive via the shell, and they all report back as though there’s no communication issue.

Here’s some relevant info:

Pool topology:
Data: 1x RAIDZ2 - 10 wide - 4 TB (shows as ? after rebooting, all mechanical SAS)
Metadata VDEV: 1x MIRROR - 2 wide - 128 GB (SATA SSD)
Log VDEV: 1 x DISK - 1 wide - 128 GB (SATA SSD)
Cache VDEV: 5 x 500 GB (SATA HDD)

Pool usage: 13.43 TiB used, 14.16 TiB available

ZFS health: Online, 0 ZFS errors, 0 errors on last scrub, completed 10 days ago, took 3 hours, 51 minutes

Do you happen to have SAS Multi-Pathing (MPT)?

I have seen this if MPT is enabled. The fact that the pool is ONLINE says that all the top level vdevs of the pool were imported. The N/A disks must be extra, and MPT is one way to get extra devices.

If @PK1048 Paul’s idea doesn’t match your environment, then some detailed diagnostics might help us - so please run the following commands and post the results of each in a separate </> box:

  • lsblk -bo NAME,LABEL,MAJ:MIN,TRAN,ROTA,ZONED,VENDOR,MODEL,SERIAL,PARTUUID,START,SIZE,PARTTYPENAME
  • sudo ZPOOL_SCRIPTS_AS_ROOT=1 zpool status -vLtsc lsblk,serial,smartx,smart
  • sudo zpool import
  • lspci
  • sudo sas2flash -list
  • sudo sas3flash -list
  • sudo storcli show all

I can’t tell in advance which of these will be useful, but asking for all at once spares a lot of back and forth and should result in a faster answer.

Some additional details on the machine are that it’s a Precision R7910, the 3.6T drives are in an SC220 enclosure connected via the SAS2008 (flashed from an H200E). All other drives are on the system’s embedded SATA controller.

I am unclear from the command output what you think is missing / the problem?

We can clearly see from lsblk that some of the drives appear twice (same serial number appears twice) which implies that you do indeed have dual paths. But I don’t have experience of this and so I’m going to leave it for the other Paul @PK1048 to give detailed advice.

However, aside from this the pool seems to have all the disks you would expect it to have and I can’t see any major pool issues from this output.

But I did spot a couple of minor things:

  1. SSDs either do not have trim capability or don’t have trim enabled
  2. I was expecting the HBA to have IT firmware not IR firmware.

As an unimportant aside, I also wonder whether you actually have a use case for an SLOG? Are you running VMs off these drives?

Storage dashboard shows 10 unused disks

“Manage Devices” for the Bulk Storage pool lists all disks. However, some lack icons, and don’t list a capacity

Clicking on the odd drives on the “Manage Devices” page for the pool fails to bring up any details on the drive

On the /storage/disks page, the nebulous drives list “N/A” as their pool

I’m willing to buy the idea that the dual paths make the drives show up twice, but I didn’t get any side-effects of that in the GUI in the previous install, so I’m not sure why it’d show up this way now.

I thought I did flash the H200E to IT mode, but I guess maybe something went wrong or I reverted back for some reason. I do know I had a fair bit of trouble during the process because of the machine. As for trim, I didn’t realize that was something we needed to manually enable on TrueNAS.

Edit: Interestingly, There’s only four drives that appear on the disks page as not having a pool, but the storage page says there’s 10 unused disks. What could be up with that?

A guess is the power problem reset your controller card mode or settings. I have no clue where to check the settings nor how to fix. Maybe check BIOS or controller settings sections?

I have no real idea how dual paths are supposed to show up in Linux - but I think I would expect them to be considered a single device, with the device driver dealing with deciding which path to use to the disk on an I/O by I/O basis.

If this is the case, then something is making the dual paths show up as separate devices - and I would think that this is going to be either a controller firmware setting or some sort of Linux device setting.

But the consequences would be likely to be as OP is actually experiencing because Linux and TrueNAS are seeing them as separate devices and not another path to the same device.

I think we really need to wait for someone e.g. @PK1048 who has a genuine understanding of dual paths (which isn’t me) who can speak from real knowledge.

You’ve created a SAS multipath configuration as pointed out by others in this thread - there are ten physical Seagate ES.3 disks, and you have twenty showing up in your lsblk - SCALE/CE doesn’t support multipath in this manner.

I assume your H200e and SC200 are connected by two SAS cables, one to the “top controller” of the SC200, and one to the “bottom controller.”

The quick fix here is simple - shut down the system, disconnect the secondary (bottom) controller, have only the first port on the H200e connected to the primary (top) controller, therefore removing multipath. Boot up and it should be as expected.

I can’t speak to whether or not you could create a full SAS wideband (x8) connection by doing a complicated and/or vendor-approved loop topology with the SC200 enclosures.

This wound up being the solution! I guess I may have always had one cable connected until I took things apart and reconnected when I reinstalled. I did attempt to run the shelf in split mode (it’s originally an MD3200), but I guess the SC200 controllers don’t support that, so a single link to the shelf will do for now.
