It is interesting.
Actually I’ve used both versions, the free version first and later the paid one.
Sadly I had a hangs after 23 days without troubles. Way more stable than usual.
I have DDR5 running at 4800, I’ve reduced it to 4200. Makes sense that instable DRAM speed mess up with C-State. Crossing fingers ![]()
Finally, TrueNAS is running for 4 weeks now without any issues.
Next thing I’ll try is to disable the “C-State-Disable-Service” and lowering the RAM speed, but I’d like to keep it running for some time.
Thanks to the forum for all the hints!
Hi all,
after almost three months of running fine without any unusual behavior, the last update removed the service and the system stopped again after two weeks. I took this oppertunity and checked the BIOS for any RAM Speed settings, but there are none, so my solution is still re-establishing the service and disabling the C-States after boot. I’ve tried to get some support from the chinese manufacturer, but no luck so far.
Thanks to all of you for all the replies, hints and solutions, this is an excellent forum!
Best regards,
Frank
This is basically the reason why I only use enterprise gear for all my servers.
Frankly, my time is too valuable to be chasing around a wild goose due to random vague issues like random crashes that are hard to reproduce and diagnose. My servers generally have 10 years service time (if not longer) so the extra cost, when amortized over that time is basically worth it plus all the hours and headaches saved from chasing a wild goose and it’s worth every penny. IPMI is also a very nice touch because I have never once attached a kb/mouse/monitor to them even while installing. Overall, one of the servers has run 24/7/365 for over a decade with zero crash and basically only reboots for updates.
TL;DR: Buy nice once, cry once vs buy cheap multiple times, cry multiple times.
Lesson learned ![]()
I hope the current hardware will runn for a while, but next time I’ll carefully check what I’ll buy and hopefully prices have dropped until that time…
