Truenas Scale reboot loop

Hello,
I’ve been using TrueNas Core for a couple of years with no issue. Can’t tell you why, I decided to switch to Scale. I reinstalled from scratch, did not use update.
However, after it has run for one day, I noticed today it is constantly rebooting - stays awake for 3-4 minutes then reboots.
In what logs can I see the reboot reason?

The device is quite small, a 2.5Ghz AMD, with 4Gb of ram, and 2 HDDS attached to USB (except the internal SSD). It does not do much but a qbit torrent and a plex with no transcoding. The same device has been running flawlessly until yesterday with TrueNas Core.

Hi!

Any chance you are able to add more memory? You’re below the minimum requirement of 8GB, and I suspect that is likely related.

Hmm, only one slot, could buy more. But could i precisely diagnose this? An error log or something?

Could i disable apps at startup and turn them on later on? Maybe a lot to be done at startup and it halts?

8 GB memory is the absolute minimum.
USB drives for data storage are not supported.

That was the case for CORE, too. You were just lucky.

Impressive. One of the differences between CORE and SCALE now is the lack of SWAP File usage in SCALE. I strongly suspect that in CORE, you were using SWAP File space which allowed the computer to continue running.

If you can, upgrade to 16GB RAM, and as said 8GB is the absolute minimum, but I don’t know what motherboard you have so I can’t say you could support this. Older system is good from a cost perspective as used RAM is fairly cheap.

Once you do get the new RAM, run Memtest86 or Memtest86+ for a few “complete” passes. Ensure the used RAM, or even new RAM is working fine.

In the meantime, if you saved a copy of your TrueNAS CORE configuration file, AND you did not update ZFS features, you could roll back to the previous version.

As said, USB isn’t “supported”, meaning if you have problems, you are basically on your own, however some of the people here will try to help you succeed.

Because we do those things that can bite us in the rear. No fault here other than “If it works, Don’t Break It” saying.

Good luck

I also noticed swap is missing, I am 100% sure swap was used in CORE. However I managed to create swap in Scale and it looks like it is used (though just a few MB, in the short time it is alive).

I just ordered 8Gb or Ram, will keep you posted if it works. I did not go for 16, as the motherboard may not support

I’ve been running for the last 2 years the USB drives. As said, no sensitive data. Just media files which I can easily replace if lost. Actually I may say I am over engineering, but it’s easier to use Plex rather than DLNA / other shares when watching on Tv.

I did not update ZFS (yet) just to allow fallback to Core.

Thank you for your support, I hope to get it right, if not, back to Core.

Holy crap, you are one of the smart ones! Good for you. I wish everyone thought ahead and/or realized the implications of upgrading the ZFS feature set.

sorry for long no-reply. All is running fine with 8GB of RAM. Thank you
