[Tutorial] How to backup your TrueCharts apps with PVC and move over to TrueNAS SCALE 24.10 Electric Eel with Docker apps

Hello. I recently migrated my TrueNAS SCALE install with a bunch of TrueCharts app over to 24.10 RC1 with Docker apps successfully, and wanted to share what I learned and how I did it successfully with my little tutorial post here:

So say that you have been running your TrueNAS SCALE 24.04 or 23.10 or older happily with your TrueCharts apps installed (as happy as you could be with that buggy mess of a project).

You either stuck with 23.10 Cobia, because you didn't want to bother doing yet another TrueCharts troublesome migration where they removed PVC and expected you to re-setup all your apps yet again (!), or you upgraded to 24.04 Fangtooth while ignoring these instructions and app still kept on working.

You kept your apps config storages to PVC as that was a simple default. <sub>(You start to grow a certain regret of not using host path mounts for everything from the beginning, but that's all water in drain now.)</sub>

Now you want to backup that data so that you can move to Docker-based apps in upcoming 24.10 Electric Eel release flawlessly and gracefully, and be happy everafter.

This tutorial and a bunch of pointers here is for you then! Read and follow it carefully and you won't get lost.

This is mostly about how to move over from the default “PVC” mounts there. It’s worth noting that after upgrading from 23.10 to 24.04 I didn’t do whatever migration steps they wanted to move away from PVC, as soon as I read “your apps won’t immediately stop working after upgrade” in their docs.

So this is mostly for people who either stayed on 23.10 or upgraded without further actions to 24.04 like me.
