Unable To Upgrade from 24.10.2.3 to 25.04.2

Hello, I couldn’t find this issue anywhere else, so hopefully this hasn’t already been solved.

I’ve been trying to do what I thought was a simple operation of changing release trains and upgrading from 24.10.2.3 to 25.04.2, but my system gets stuck at the following point at boot after:

spl: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.
zfs: module license 'CDDL' taints kernel.
Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint

I have let it sit at that point for over 8 hours (I went to bed) to see if it would eventually continue, but it would not.

  • I don’t see any errors before that point (that look significant or different from my current boot at least)
  • I didn’t see anything that I needed to do to prepare my system for this upgrade, or did I miss something?

Does anyone see anything that I missed or can check on?

I’m just catching up this evening on some updates. The minor version update to 24.10.2.4 went off without issue, but the upgrade from 24.10.2.4 to 25.04.2.6 produced identical results to what you posted above.

I have been able to boot back into the functioning 24.10 install, so no big deal for now, but I’d like to know if you or anyone else here has any ideas what’s hanging the kernel here? When booting back into 24.10 I see very similar console messages, including the zfs module loading v2.2.99-1 and the next several lines of output from the kernel are calling out the disks at their hardware locations, like this:

sd 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0

sd 0:0:1:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 0

So it seems like either that’s what’s not going well when booting 25.04, or before it gets to that point the kernel panics when loading the zfs kernel module…

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Jumping between those TrueNAS versions can be picky, especially if there’s an app or plugin hanging onto something in the background. I’d double-check the update train, make sure the system dataset isn’t locked, and confirm there’s enough free boot pool space. A manual update file sometimes works when the GUI refuses. Upgrades always seem smooth… until they’re not.

@dewhite04 I never found a “real” solution to the issue, but decided to take a chance and kinda “force” the upgrade. I don’t have a ton of customizations applied to my system, and at the end never seemed to lose any configuration, so it went well for me.

What I ended up doing:

  • Backed up the 24.10 configuration
  • Performed clean install of 25.04 over my old TrueNAS drive
  • Restored using configuration from 24.10

It’s likely in no way a recommended way of doing it, but it worked.

I did not have any virtual machines installed, but was (and still am) using 3 “Apps” (2 from the catalog thing, and 1 custom), had many SMB shares, 1 NFS share, data snapshots working, cloud backups working, UPS connected. And when I successfully updated, I didn’t see any issues with those, and couldn’t find anything else missing from my 24.10 install that didn’t make it into 25.04.
