Update from TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.4.2 to 23.10.0 Fails - Reboot loop

I’ve attempted to perform an automatic and a manual update from 22.12.4.2 Bluefin scale to 23.10. The goal is to get to 24.10.

After Grub loads the system will start to boot, but then reboots back to grub. The last messages I see during boot sequence are:

Chipset Initialization: DONE
Legacy Support initialization: Starting…

My system is a Lenovo RD650 with a dedicated 1TB Samsung SSD boot drive.
1 CPU with Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 @2.4GHz
16GB Ram

All other updates in the Bluefin worked perfectly. I don’t have any other information or logs to assist.

I’ve been trying to work at this for awhile, now as time permits, but I am truly stuck attempting to upgrade to the newest release of Scale.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You should always update to the last Update of the particle release. That way, any issues are more likely to be resolved.

23.10 (Cobia) had a 23.10.2 update that is solid and still widely used.

After you try that we can see what grub issues may be relevant. Have a look at 23.10 release notes.

Thanks, I appreciate the quick reply. I tried 23.10.2 with the same results.

An update, I selected the 23.10.2 image in grub and watched it attempt to load. The last step before the reboot is “Loading initial ramdisk”, then reboot occurred again. The only think I am able to do to get past the reboot is to select the 22.12.4.2 version.

There seems to be a lot of forum posts regarding this issue. So I dont know where to start.

Have you run a 24 hour memtest on your memory?

I’m loading memtest86 onto a USB boot drive to do that now.

My guess is that its a GRUB issue…
UEFI is recommended

Otherwise, can you save your config file,
do a clean install and then import the config file.

So far the memtest is running well. No errors.

So, being a noob, if I download the latest TrueNAS Scale image, and install it overtop my existing 22.12.4.2 Scale image, I just need to perform an initial setup upon installation, then import/upload my existing config file to get things back to where I am now? Anything to worry about or consider other than my config?

Yes, but be familiar with the process.
