Update to 25.10 from 25.04.2.6 failed to import pool boot-pool

Updated to latest 24.4.2.6 successfully, backed up again and updated to 25.10. On reboot I got failed to import pool error message. Tried

zpool import -a -d /dev/disk/by-id
with no pools available to import response.

Rebooted back to 24.4.2.6 OK (able tor start apps, etc.)

I then checked the boot disk, then did a scrub (it’s first):

Size: 220 GiB
Used: 59.56 GiB
Last Scrub Run: 2026-01-17 18:54:53

Rebooted to 25.10 and same message about failed to import boot pool.

Finding so many different messages with failed to import boot pool and was uncertain what the best course for troubleshooting/fix.

The only alert I have on 24.4 is New ZFS version or feature flags are available for pool ‘Main’. Upgrading pools is a one-time process that can prevent rolling the system back to an earlier TrueNAS version. It is recommended to read the…

Bare Metal (see signature); Primary apps damselfly, digikam, immich, Nextcloud, HomeAssistant. 2 Pools: 1 RAIDZ1 4 wide 7 TiB, 1 MIRROR 2 wide 5.46 Tb.

Looking for a cookbook to follow for troubleshooting. Tried a few things in the forums with no success and I’ve gotten in trouble blindly trying things.

Easiest is to boot to 24.4.2.6. Delete the 25.10 boot environment and try doing an upgrade again. Do not upgrade any pool features at this time.

@jengle I don’t see any hardware listing nor signature. I don’t think signature edits are working if you just added recently. I haven’t been able to update mine for a while on the forum, a few months?

Possibly some hardware that dropped out of support in the latest version? I vaguely remember some particular LSI HBA not recognised by 25.10.

  • APPS (primary)

    • damselfly
    • digikam
    • Nextcloud
    • homeassistant
    • immich

The System > Boot UI screen : activated 24.10.2.3; deleted 25.x

Rebooted & Tested apps; re-applied update to 25.04.

SUCCESS! Now just have to restart apps. SO much easier than a re-install. Thanks so much @SmallBarky
