Updating TrueNAS 23

Hello. Tell me, is it safe to update from version 23 to 25, through the official update in the Update tab? Will the settings be saved and what are the possible consequences of the update?

Hi. Can’t say for sure, but you can probably just update and see it yourself. In case something is off, you can revert back to your current version under the System → Boot or choose a different environment during the boot.

It helps to know your current system setup. If you have only storage, there shouldn’t be any problems. Do you have app or VMs? Those may have to be recreated.

Only storage with smb settings

The recommended update path is still from one major version to the next. So 23.10 to 24.04 to 24.10 to 25.04

could there be consequences if I update to version 25 right away? and a step-by-step update?

there were some major changes between each major release which could cause trouble that’s why the release notes specifiy the updte from one major release to the next.

did i understand correctly that i can make a system backup in the System Settings - Boot tab?

You don’t have to create a system backup, you only need a config backup. The update process even asks you if you want to create a config backup.
If an update goes wrong, you can simply reboot to the older boot environment.
If that also doesn’t help, install fresh and restore from config backup and everything will be back.

Can you tell me how to correctly make a backup of the config? This is when it asks to save the config to the local system before updating?

Simply click yes when it asks if it should make a backup and it will be automatically created and downloaded by your browser to your download folder
