Upgrade the Ixsystems Mini X to the Mini R system

I have a Mini R coming Friday. What I would like to do is take the 5 raidz2 drives out of my Mini X+ and put them all in the Mini R, then restore the Mini X+ config to the Mini R. What order should I use?

  1. Backup Mini X+ config
  2. Export the only pool, 1 x RAIDZ2 | 5 wide | 10.91 TiB
  3. Install the raidz2 drives in the Mini R
  4. Import the pool to the Mini R
  5. Restore the mini X+ config to the Mini R
  6. Interface port would be the same along with the IP address and SMB shares.

Did I forget anything?

I think you have everything. Since you have done the homework, let me know if there are any issues and I’ll get you some technical support.

Please report back on the process in any case. I’d like to know how easy/difficult it is.

I don’t think you need step 4. Whence you restore the X+ config in step 5 on the Mini R, that will automatically do that part.

Next, step 6 might be problematic. Only in the sense if the hardware for the NIC changes, the old configuration might not recognize that the NIC needs to move, (and guess what to do…).

To make sure you can work around this, verify you have console access. After step 5 is complete, you may need to get on the console and manually change the NIC and assign it the same IP. Another reboot probably would be in order.

Note that I have not had to do any of this, it is just theoretical for me. Let us know what you needed to do so others can learn. (That includes me…)

My upgrade from the ixsystems Mini X+ to the Mini R went well.
I ended up doing the following,

Backed up Mini X+ config with export password secert seed.
Installed my addon tp-link 2.5g card.
This Mini R shipped with Truenas Core installed on a M.2 NVMe SSD, doesn’t have drivers for the network card. No problem. Cable connected to the ix0 port and dhcp assigned IP and connected to it with truenas.local .
Updated Core to Scale 24.04 (which has my network card drivers).
Rebooted, recabled and From console reconfigured my 2.5g card to my “old” static IP.
Went back into GUI and connected again to it with truenas.local.
Updated Scale 24.04 to 24.10.1
Restored the mini X+ config to the Mini R.
System reboots after the config upload, wait 5-10 seconds and did a manual shutdown.
Finally Installed the 5 raidz2 drives in the Mini R.
Rebooted and I’m good to go.

Now waiting for the 24.10.2 update at the end of the month to start expanding the raidz2 drives.
So anyone with a Truenas Mini X, this is an easy upgrade.
The saga continues…

Finally got around to expanding my raidz2 pool today around lunch time. Happy to report it’s going well. Going from a raidz2 with 5 12tb drives to 6. It’s going to finish in about 17 and a half hours.
