Upgrading advice to enable tailscale

Ahoy,

I need to enable tailscale and currently running TrueNAS-12.0-U6.1 .
I do not see an App option in the left side menu buttons. Is my best option to upgrade? What is the recommended version to upgrade to? 13.0-RELEASE? I am viewing the Release Notes and Changelog and not sure if I should be concerned about any of its entries. Any guidance is helpful.

Thanks in advance.

TrueNAS CORE has never had apps; it had plugins–but they were always poorly maintained, and are now completely unmaintained.

If you want to run Tailscale on your NAS, your best bet is to upgrade to SCALE/CE. Failing that, the only other method is:

  • Upgrade to CORE 13.3, which is a completely dead-end release
  • Create a FreeBSD 13.5 jail there
  • Install Tailscale in that

What is the best way to update from CORE → SCALE. Looks like I need to freshly install SCALE. Is it possible to use the configuration file from TrueNAS-12.0-U6.1 for SCALE or do I need to migrate to 13.0U6.x first?

Here are the migration directions I am following: Preparing to Migrate | TrueNAS Documentation Hub

Cheers

I don’t think there’s a significant change, but the current version of that guide is here:

…and I’d follow those instructions. Specifically:

TrueNAS Enterprise-licensed (or community systems that haven’t switched to 13.3) systems on 12.0x or earlier should upgrade to the latest 13.0 release before migration

Thanks, Dan. I appreciate your helpful answers.
